Posted from an Email I got from them..........

Dear Oakridge BBQ Customers, Fans and Supporters –

Operating a micro business at the tip of the spear of quality is inherently risky, and a down economy most certainly exacerbates that risk. The ever-rising cost of goods coupled with the weakening of the global economy has resulted in Oakridge BBQ experiencing two consecutive years of double-digit losses and the collapse of our worldwide wholesale-to-dealer book of business thereby making it economically impractical to manufacture OakridgeBBQ rubs and spices. Unfortunately, it does not look like these economic strains will ease for quite some time. Therefore, Oakridge BBQ LLC will cease operations as soon as our current spice supply runs out, or December 31, 2022, whichever comes first.

My decision to stick to my word and honor our industry leading commitment to quality and always – regardless of the cost – use the finest ingredients available undoubtedly attributed to our loss of profitability, but in hindsight I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve stood firm on this commitment to our customers to the very end, and as the saying goes: “It’s better to burn out than to fade away.”

On a personal note, this decision was not without a great deal of serious study, introspection and prayer. Oakridge BBQ was started because of the leading of the Holy Spirit, was blessed by God to many great successes over the past 12-plus years, and now my only objective is to continue honoring and praising God in the full times as well as the thin, regardless of what comes. So, I am very much at peace with this decision. In fact, I am actually excited to see what God has planned for me in this next chapter of my life.

To our sponsorship team members, retail dealers, customers and die-hard fans of Oakridge BBQ, I need you to know that I consider all of you more than just my customers & fans – you ALL are and always will be family. You have steadfastly supported our little brand even in these hard economic times when a $25 bag of barbecue rub shouldn’t be a priority, and for that I am eternally grateful and I will never forget you.

Finally, for the sake of other “mom & pop” small businesses out there silently struggling to keep their heads above water – please don’t take for granted they will always be there tomorrow. Give them some love and help support their hard work and dedication to being independent and small. As for Oakridge, I will not selling the brand or the company, so now is your last chance to get your favorite Oakridge BBQ rubs before they are gone forever. My family and I, and our 4 employees would greatly appreciate it if you would help us finish these last two months strong.

    Thanks for everything,

    Michael Trump

Founder / Master Blender, Oakridge BBQ

Thanks for posting it, as I was not on their mailing lists. I greatly respect the last paragraph

The struggle is real. I chat with the owner of Heaven Made Products nearly weekly and he's been telling me about the woes of the seasoning/rub business from his perspective too. It is a shame that so many of 'the good guys/gals' are affected like this.

Is it cost of ingredients and their inability to really raise prices since there's so much competition?

I missed the email so thanks for bringing it to our attention. I really like their products, especially black ops. I ordered a few more.

Dang - very few rubs I think are worth the price - I've usually been buying bulk spices from Winco and making my own rubs; I guess this doesn't help these businesses much. I did however just receive, about two weeks ago, a pound of Secret Weapon as this is one that I felt was worth the cost... I really like it on ribs. It looks like these are still available on Amazon.

BF asked if I can reverse engineer the recipe. I’m good, but not that good…..

The funny thing is you (or anyone) could probably get in the neighborhood since the ingredients are on the back of the bags and they're listed in order of prevalence. But getting from "kind of like it" to "just like it"....

I got their email too. Really bummed me out...sad story. I've tried a bunch of their rubs over the last few years. Really love Carne Crosta especially, also Santa Maria and SPOGOS (although I had to be selective with the audience for SPOGOS, too peppery for some). I usually try to avoid overstocking rubs so they stay fresh, but just bought 3lb each of Carne and Santa Maria..

I've never tried them. There are so many rubs out there that they fell under my radar. I just bought the Backyard BBQ Kit so that I can try a variety of their rubs. I'm sure I'll regret not getting the larger sizes but when I try them maybe I can get another order of my faves in. If I buy a large amount I'll probably store in the freezer.

As noted previously, I had never heard of them. I considered placing an order but I already have a bunch of rubs on hand that I need to try.
also, with my luck, I would find one that I really loved, and would never be able to get it again. In this case, I figure it's better to have never loved than to have loved and lost

That's a wise decision. I've got a couple of their rubs on hand that I haven't tried yet, and I'm wondering whether I should throw them out untasted for the same reason.

JHB - why would you throw out perfectly good rubs? So, you like them but can't get them - you still get the experiences having used them.

Super disappointing to hear! One thing I love about them is that the salt content is intentionally relatively low. I never worried about over salting any of my cuts of meat. SPOGOS and Secret Weapon were always in my rotation. I really need to find an alternate. My local shop carries the Spiceology line but I worry about freshness dealing with a large company like that.
