Just my 2 coins- I have been tempted to buy commercial and have tried a pinch or two for taste. The connivence is intriguing. But I have had good success mixing my own for a few years now. I'm learning it's best to go with your gut feeling with the meat in front of you. Competitions may be a different story, I wouldn't know.

Hmm how about bad Byron's butt rub? I haven't used it in years, but it works on pork, and with some coffee added it works on beef too. Not the best, but versatile and if it was all I could have...

I've tried many commercial rubs. Only a very few get reordered. I always have Bad Byron's on hand.

I like Plowboys Yardbird for a pork dry brine, plus a second coating of Meathead's Memphis Dust just before cook time. I grilled some 2.5" thick Berkshire pork chops with these rubs last weekend and they turned out great. Am cooking two more this weekend.

I use that like I would seasoned salt, even sprinkling it on grilled veggies, with a little olive oil to help it stick.

In fact, I ought to do a taste test next to seasoned salt, just to see what is different. Hmmm.

Heath Riles, Peach Rub. I'm sure it would get old at some point though, as with all the others

This is very black pepper forward, which I love, and it's not super sweet or salty. Savory perhaps? I put this on pork AND chicken. Just had some grilled chicken thighs with this on them last night.

It’s been over a decade since I last used a commercial pork rub, so I don’t have a recommendation.

Meatheads Memphis Dust has been the only rub I’ve used since. I’ve modified mine over the years to fit the flavor profile my family likes.

Easy to make. No garbage fillers. Only high quality ingredients. Infinitely adjustable.

                  This.

I’ve said this before but I haven’t purchased a pre-made rub in decades. I usually have a lot of MMD on hand, with a few variations standing by. Along with rubs I created.

I’ve found that pretty much every commercial rub needs tweaking..,and if I have to "fix" it, I might as well just make it myself. So there’s that.

As I don’t buy rubs, I have no idea whether or not it’s cost effective. Don’t care...I always end up with the rub I want doing it my way.

Eat BBQ Zero to Hero would be my commercial pick. I did a blind taste test with several folks using three different rubs some years ago on 3 different racks of ribs. Eat was everyone's unanimous favorite.

Left to my own devices I use MMD and Eat as a combo rub on ribs and butts. Works really well.

I like Harley's Texas BBQ Seasoning used as a dry brine with Meathead's Memphis Dust, salt free with MSG layered on top.
