This just made my day. Eggs & bacon has come full circle. Who woulda thunk it.
What would we do without scientists.

There had to be some odd criteria in this study. Almonds at number 1? Pork fat in the top 10? It appears they were just looking at nutritional content and not other considerations like calories. The presence of spices and things like dried parsley and celery flakes indicates this as well--by weight, they are extremely nutritious, because they have almost no weight, so pound-for-pound they have tons of nutrients.

Seems to me to be another B.S. study designed to prove what the researchers were paid to prove.

I will continue to gladly eat pork fat ground up in my brats, in my bacon, and anywhere else it should appear, but I'm not going to pretend it's health food.

The EliteReaders article is really misleading. A chart from the original study that I can view shows pork fat is a valuable source of nutrients, but the article is trying to hammer this minor tidbit into a big hairy deal. The article could have made just as strong an argument for the nutritional value of ocean perch or scallops, for example, as it did for pork fat.

But pork fat makes for entertaining reading and ocean perch does not.

Murdy -- I agree that calories doesn't seem to be a main factor for how they rated the nutritional values. I can't read the whole research paper so I can't tell you exactly what criteria they used nor why.

Turns out that article is correct. I just ate the heck out of some pork fat (blade steaks covered with mushroom soup gravy) and I feel great!

Fats are an essential nutrient so not surprising that one would rank pretty high on the raw food scale. The study certainly doesn't say it's ok to eat large amounts of pork fat by itself.
Here's a link which provides some good background/info on the BBC report:
HEALTH Scientists studied more than 1,000 raw foods, assigning each a nutritional fitness score. The higher the score, the more likely each food would meet your daily nutritional needs when eaten i…

Here's a link to the BBC report:

What it says about pork fat:

              8. PORK FAT
              632kcal, $0.95, per 100g
A good source of B vitamins and minerals. Pork fat is more unsaturated and healthier than lamb or beef fat.
              NUTRITIONAL SCORE: 73

I think it's also important to think about the distinction between "healthy eating" and "nutritious eating". They don't always mean the same thing.

I don’t eat raw pork fat so I probably cook all the nutrients out of it. But it sure is tasty.

Thank you for sharing. Please remember, the General Discussion channel is for anything off the topic of BBQ, food, gear, accessories. I have moved this to Food > Pork.

It's important to have a little bit of fat in your diet. All things in moderation, of course.

Depends on the pig and the pig farmer, if we're being completely honest. Commodity pork is high in polyunsaturated omega-6 fat. One of many reasons that I don't eat a lot of commodity pork in my quest to eat better.

                    Honestly, this list is bizarre.
