Just picked up a pork shoulder picnic...

    Hey folks,
I got my hands on some pork shoulder picnic for cheap. Real nice piece of pig. I have done pork butt a few times, but never a shoulder. Is there any difference in the process for smoking this as opposed to a butt? Or should I just smoke it the same way?

Depending on the packaging company it could be the same thing just different name for the cut...

Is it around 8lbs give or take a couple and does it have a bone in it on one side?

Ok. You can pretty well treat it like a butt.

Thanks! That's what I thought... But I had to be sure

I treat it like a Butt. But, I did do a picnic using the brine recipe from Cook’s Country for Cuban Pork that I really liked.

I've even cooked them at the same time! No difference to talk about.

Some picnics come with skin on. If so, remove it and proceed as a butt! Good luck!

It did have skin on it. I took it off

Take the skin off trim the fat and make some kracklins out of it.
