    Bad Rib Bummin’

I just opened a 2 pack of STL cut ribs I bought from Sams a couple of days ago, was going to dry brine them. I thought I detected a funkalicious olfactory sensation, and then my daughter walked over and said "ooh stinky". The sell by date is May 29 (in 2 days). They’ve been refrigerated the entire time. Wife got home, asked her, she detected a funk as well. And they’re slimy. And it’s supposed to rain all day tomorrow. Part of me says "Follow the signs, it’s not meant to be", and part of me says "Come hell or high water we are smoking ribs tomorrow". Although I’d have to go buy more. Not going back to Sams, we bought a big salmon from them last year that was bad. Anyone else, or are we just unlucky? I need to carry out the trash, it reeks in here... 🤬

Get your Money Back. Get some more ribs and have a great cook.

I had that happen at Sam's a couple years ago, one of their 3-packs of baby backs. Serious funk smell. Sell-by date was 3 or 4 days away yet. I called and they said I just has to take the packaging back (and likely my receipt, not remembering that though) and they did an exchange for me. Trouble was Sam's is about a 30-35min drive for me one way.

But I've bought dozens of racks from them, and many other meats, w/o any trouble.

It's a simple rule: When in doubt THROW IT OUT! (Or feed it to the MIL or whoever can get you a promotion if their position opens up.)

I’ve had a bad pack of chicken and of ribs over the years, and Sam’s replaced it. Don’t risk cooking it.

Yeah there was never any consideration of cooking those at all.

So I headed to The Fresh Market this morning at 8am when they opened. Reliable butcher and BBs were 1/2 price (unfortunately they don’t offer STL cut). I walked in and immediately saw one of the butchers that always hooks me up. I told him I had to toss 2 full racks last night and he says "Were they Smithfield." Yup... that’s what SAMs carries. I asked him what was up and he said their quality has gone down the tubes the past few years, it’s like they can’t figure out the direction they want to go in his estimation. Then he shows me their 3 pack of BBs which he says they always have, but they aren’t typically out you have to ask. The Fresh Market with the save!

My kiddo is my dry rub specialist, and as we get to the last one she says "Roger Mooking needs to come to our house cuz we make some KILLER ribs." 🤣👍🏻

              Nice save!
Last year our Sam's had Smithfield ribs once and I tried and was not happy but I think it was just me not cooking long enough. But I have not seen them in there since but never did ask why. Tried again a couple weeks ago, had some Smithfield spares from Walmart this year and were very good.

What does your Sam's usually have? I think Smithfield is about all I've seen at Sam's, WM, Costco, etc., I think. I've been debating ordering some Iberico just to see if there is ANYthing out there different, lol.

I believe its IBP, although I do not buy there as much because a local meat market has better pricing.

It somethimes gets stinky. Wash them off and air out the kitchen. The funk usually goes away. If not toss it out. Or take it back

Did I ever tell you about the time I was 10 years old, and being the oldest of the herd, I took it upon myself to cook some lunch for the kids? I found these great looking "pre-lubricated" hot dogs in the fridge. So I cooked them. Oy! What a mistake slime mold is! ;-)

As others have said: when in doubt, toss it out!

Ha! Well EdF you’ve wildly overcome your early childhood "oops!" 😄 I never even considered cooking those ribs last night. In fact I had to move the trash can out of the garage and into the driveway today - yikes!

Was that $2.99 a pound the normal Fresh Market price, or a sale? That’s as good as the normal pricing at Costco or Sam’s here.

EDIT: ok I missed the half price part. I’ll have to watch the local Fresh Market here for sales.
