    Fire and Rescue meal.

Some of you may remember Feb 16 there was a gas explosion in a Sterling VA. home. One firefighter was killed, and others injured. This is close to where we live. I am friends with some of the members of that fire department. A group of friends and I are making a meal for the fallen firefighter's family and the fire department he worked out of.

I'm sure I've asked this before, how much pork butt to feed how many people? Thanks again for all your assistance.

I always figure 1/2lb per person. I figure to get @80% weight after cook (10lbs pre-smoked=8lbs smoked)
God Bless you all for that thoughtfulness.

If it's bone-in pork butt, I usually figure raw weight 1 lb per adult, 1/2 lb per child under 12. That'll usually give you some leftovers, but that's a good problem to have.

Fair play to you for looking out for the family.

Like I said above, we've got these meals covered but let's take some time to appreciate what these guys and gals do for us. Alot of them are just volunteering to run in burning houses and pull us out. Or scrape us off the road and get us to a hospital.

Thanks to all for assistance and well wishes.

            It's looking like:
            50 lbs pre cook pork.
            Buns for sandwiches.
            Baked beans.
            Coleslaw.
            Carrot cake cupcakes.
            Mountain Dew cake.

Just wanted to say how much I appreciate what you are doing. In September 2002 I was on duty as an EMS driver with my volunteer fire company when we got the dispatch of a gas explosion in the next town over. A day I will never forget. 1 dead and 17 volunteer firefighters injured. Between ferrying the injured to EVAC helicopters, driving others to the regional shock trauma center and then on to the shock trauma center in Baltimore, it was the longest 24 hours of my life.
You are doing a good thing.

The meal was a success and much appreciated.

We split up the cook to make it more manageable. I cooked 3 butts, 28 lbs raw on my Weber Performers + SnS and my friend did 23lbs on his BGE.

I was gone for work so I couldn't attend. I did get to sample some of the butt.

Bless you and your friend for stepping up for our first responders who endanger themselves daily and never seem to be suitably compensated.
