    Baby got butt..........

(with apologies to Sir Mix A Lot)

Most on here are probably familiar with the explanations about how a Pork Butt has nothing to do with the butt of a pig, it's from the shoulder. Some may have heard that the name emanates from the storage container used many years ago to transport and store the "butts" (no relation to Bertha and her sisters either). Pork Butt rolls off the tongue better than Pork 1/2 Tun as well. A butt barrel is just one of a series of sizes of casks as you can see in the picture:

    That's firkin amazing!

I did know about the tun, butt, hogshead, and, of course, the barrel. This is a really neat lineup.

For a historical twist, Admiral Horatio Nelson's body was placed in a "cask of brandy" after he died of his wounds during the Battle of Trafalgar. I'm guessing a puncheon would have accommodated the Admiral nicely.

And to think, I thought it was because it was such a pain in the butt because it takes so long for them to cook... I now have my daily learn something new requirement out of the way. Thank you!

Knew about some of this from my brewing days... but damn those English! All these crazy names for incrementally different things. Just like inch, foot, mile, furlong, cord, bushel, peck... My physics prof as an undergrad called it Screwed Up British Engineering Units, in contrast to the elegant, simple, and vastly preferable SI/metric system, in which all one needs to do is be able to move a decimal place and remember that 1L of water weighs 1kg.

And to add to the mix up when we colonists bastardize "their language", the petroleum industry measures barrels of product as 42 gallon units, despite the pictograph above, and for those who think a barrel is 55 gallons, that's more accurately known as a drum. There's more, but we'll give the collective minds a rest about here..............

And let's not forget the loss of Mars Climate Orbiter in 1999 because JPL was using metric but Lockheed, who built the spacecraft, was using English units... the absolute values of the particular quantities were sufficiently similar that it wasn't until the spacecraft was over halfway there before it became apparent. It never had a chance to make orbit, instead it turned into a demonstration of "lithobraking"...
