Great Rib Cook with a change

Smoked a rack yesterday for the game. I happened earlier to watch a video of Tuffy Stone in which he brushed on melted butter one hour into the cook. I gave it a try and it certainly made a difference in the texture and flavor of the exterior. I forgot to do my usual saucing about 45 minutes before pulling them off, busy yelling at the Eagles. This was a dry rib, except for the butter, which i usually don't favor. I actually enjoyed the rib without any sauce. Again this was a no wrap cook, 4 1/2 hours straight through. Have you tried this at all? Can't wait to try it again.

I've used butter before in a mop sauce, it is really good.

I've used butter when wrapping before, never just basted with it on an open unwrapped cook. I might give it a try if I ever BBQ again. lol

I have tried spritzing ribs with spray butter. This works too. I really like Tuffy Stones' video and will try real butter. It is melted butter, kind of close to clarified. Or maybe use clarified butter for Gee.

Seems like for this you'd actually want the milk solids in the butter.

mnavarre Why you'd you want mike solids in the butter? To brown maybe for another layer of flavor?

bbqLuv Yeah, that's my thought. I think the color is why he's using it.

I am looking for a change in my next rib cook. I had plans to employ an unusual ingredient in my triple rub mix on one rack, do a 3-2-1 or similar on the other, and heck, this sounds like a great thing to try on rack #3. Thanks!
