    Hotdogs are sandwiches????

The Truth will set you free.

Ah, the age-old debate: is a hotdog a sandwich? Let’s break it down with a bit of culinary logic and cultural flair: 🥖 The Case For Hotdogs Being Sandwiches
    • Bread + Filling: A hotdog consists of a split bun and a meat filling—technically meeting the definition of a sandwich.
    • USDA Definition: The U.S. Department of Agriculture classifies a sandwich as “meat or poultry between two slices of bread, a bun, or a biscuit.” That would include hotdogs.
    • Taxonomy of Food: Some food theorists argue that hotdogs fall under the broader “sandwich” category, much like subs or hoagies.
🌭 The Case Against Hotdogs Being Sandwiches
    • Cultural Identity: Hotdogs have a distinct identity. No one says, “I’ll have a frankfurter sandwich.”
    • Bun Structure: Unlike most sandwiches, the bun is usually connected on one side, forming a hinge—more taco-like than sandwich-like.
    • Dedicated Category: Menus often list hotdogs separately from sandwiches, reinforcing their standalone status.
    🧠 Verdict?
It depends on whether you're asking a food scientist, a linguist, or someone at a backyard BBQ. Technically, yes. Culturally, not really. It’s like calling a burrito a wrap—it might be true, but it feels wrong.

But the first issue is whether hotdogs are meat.

Call it what you want, they are fun to eat once in a while. Some places make a Hoagie on a roll but don't cut it all the way through to be hinged. Other places cut it totally in half first. It is what it is.

Hot dog surrounded by bread = sandwich.
Hot dog surrounded by a tortilla = taco.
Hot dog on a dinner plate with sides = tube steak.
Hot dog in the hands of a toddler = pacifier.
          etc...
No matter how you serve them, it's a hot dog and they're good.

What if I put my hot dog in a hamburger bun.....is it a hamburger?

And by the way, there is only one truth that will set you free, but not allowed to talk about it on this board.

So then what are Vienna sausages on a hotdog bun called?

It's a hot dog. When at the game does the vendor yell hot dogs here or sandwiches here? And you call to the vendor, what do you call out for? A couple of hot dogs or a couple of sandwiches?

I think the term hotdog is for the meat item itself, not the entire creation. We just naturally assume it comes with a bun. Without the bun, it's still called a hotdog. Kinda like when we say spaghetti it's ACTUALLY the pasta...we just assume in most instances that it comes with a tomato based sauce.

A hot dog is a cooked sausage, often called a frankfurter or wiener, that is served in a sliced bun. It is not a salad. It is not a sandwich.
