Can you call a sandwich a “recipe”?

You can't discriminate against sandwiches just because it's putting together (building) something with various ingredients. A salad would be the same. Lasagna is just layers of things and baked. Pizza too. Etc.

If Cooks Illustrated says you can, I'll say you can.

I guess I do not get why this is even a question.

Of course sandwiches are recipes. You are making food. Anytime you are doing that, it is a recipe. No matter how simple or complex. IMHO.

Even a grilled cheese, as simple as it is, is still a recipe.

That is true, but that isn’t really the question. Literally it is true, but in the general sense of how we share and communicate, are variations unique recipes? Would you say, “I have this great recipe for a ham and cheese sandwich”? Or would you say, “I put roasted red peppers and Gouda cheese on my ham and cheese sandwiches”? By varying ingredients, did you create a new recipe?

Yes, I would say that I have a great recipe for a ham sandwich. I would say if you are adding things to any recipe, you are creating something and making it your own. The changes might be subtle but it is still a different or new recipe.

According to my 12 yo son, he asks me for the recipe of a sandwich I made him. (Just a turkey and cheese sandwich). So I say if a kid thinks of it as a recipe it probably is. 🤔🤣🤣

I say yes. There are techniques and specific ingredients for every sandwich that makes it what it is. It may be a simple recipe but it is certainly a recipe. A grilled cheese has bread, cheese, butter and is grilled. A tuna sandwich has bread, tuna, mayo, salt and pepper. You can add to the basic foundation to customize but to be called a tuna sandwich you need those specific ingredients. There are endless variations but to be a tuna sandwich you need the basics. It may seem simple and so familiar that you do not have to pull out a book to make a grilled cheese. However imagine you were visiting from a country that didn't have grilled cheese and you were served an amazing grilled cheese sandwich. You would ask for the recipe.

Though it may be simple, if you liked your brisket grilled cheese you would remember that adding brisket to a grilled cheese was delicious and would add that "ingredient" to your regular grilled cheese again. So yes it is a recipe.
