I usually go with Costco. No matter where you shop, unless you buy a huge bulk amount (which will likely go bad before you can use it all unless you split with friends or cook a TON), spices are not cheap. And even the cheap ones generally aren't good. After you compare what you can make to what you'd pay at bigpoppasmokers.com or somewhere else it works out to be pretty cheap. Smart & Final may be another one you'd want to check out. Or restaurant Depot if you are a KCBS member

I buy 6 containers of the same spice (buck each at a local discount store) every time to make my rub. Rub you would use for pork butt, ribs, and works great, very consistent, and for 6 bucks I get 6 containers of it. Dump the 6 into a Ziploc, shake shake shake, refill the bottles. Been doing it for years. My preference is 1 container of each garlic powder, onion powder (not salt), Cajun seasoning, cumin, chili, mustard. That's it, mix, reload the spice containers and away you go. OF course you can add sugar to your rubs to taste.

Spices do go bad, so I now buy in the smallest container I can find - unless it's something I use a ton of. I used to use Penzey's, but they sent out a very political email, (which they have every right to do), and whether or not I agreed with it, I don't want political messages from someone I buy from. So I no longer buy from them and just buy locally unless it's something unusual. That hasn't happened recently.

It helps a if you buy whole spices keep them in the freezer and break out the mortar and pestle as needed.

I too used to use Penzey's but no longer. I use https://www.thespicehouse.com/

Anyone ever heard of Regal seasoning? Webstuarantstore.com sells it. I just worry about prices of seasonings when they are low. I can get get 24oz of black pepper for under $11. Just not sure about the quality of it.

My wife and I always used Penzeys until recently.
We found a local spice company that pretty much blows Penzy's away.
Their buttermilk ranch salad dressing is just totally unbelievable.
Their taco seasoning is addictive.
The rest of their spices are reasonable, and REALLY fresh and they do ship.

Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.
I buy from Penzey's and don't give a damn about their political emails. That's what the delete button is for.
