    This post is Willy's fault.

In another post Willy talked about a dish from childhood called Monkey Gland Steak. Sorry, but that sounds awful to me.

So I thought it would be fun and/or gross to post foods that sound, (or are), unappetizing to you although others might find them very tasty.

My contribution is from Viet Nam and is called Nouc Mam. It is fermented fish oil and is made by leaving fish in the sun to rot and collecting the oil that drips off the rotting fish. There was a nouc mam factory not far from where I was stationed and if the wind came from that direction it was very.... unpleasant.

OK - add your own tasty treats.

The whole idea of chitterlings (chittlins here in the south) just makes me want to throw up. There are too many good parts of a hog or cow to resort to eating their intestines, imho.

OMG! the crispy, crunchy yummies? These are what we use to make sausages and when we cook a sausage, the crispy/crunchy outside of the sausage! that is all chitterlings is, just without the filing!

RonB there is a Thai version of that sauce my BF likes and would often get when he was in NYC. There is also a Chinese relative that's a fishy pork nastiness that he also loves, the nastier the better. Barf. I tried it but I'd rather have durian.

I ate a lot of strange things when I was stationed in Japan, Korea, and the Philippines. One thing I could never stomach, (unless I was totally snockered) was balut. Balut is a fertilized chicken or duck egg that is allowed to incubate for 14-21 days, then is boiled and eaten right from the shell. Often they are buried in the sand during incubation. It is a very common street food in the Philippines.

yes! THAT is one thing I could not wrap my self around to eating. however, I can understand the attraction. Fetal Calf, the original Veal (no one does veal that way anymore but that was the origin) is amazing in texture. I can see duck being similar

head cheese. that's funny! just the small bits of meat the trimmings and such, in a suspension of ground meats and gelatin, sliced or eaten as a spread. Blood Pudding AKA black sausage. GOOD stuff. people who live liver would like it.

We have a version of headcheese called souse. My dad liked it fried. I first had blood sausage in Scotland. Love it! I think it's scrapple's british cousin.

I's proud to be blamed! BTW, nuoc mam is good stuff, too.

Do try the monkey gland sauce on a cube steak. Gooooood stuff!

The Y brought home Cubed Steak this week. I love that every once in a while. breaded with peppered flour, fried in bacon fat, smothered in a beautiful peppery white gravy, that is VERY yummy!

Actually tried haggis once in the U.K. and it was good ... a lot like Louisiana style dirty rice. Scotch whiskey might have been involved...

YUM! I ate a lot of haggis in Scotland and have finally found a place here to get it. I guess if you like grains mixed with "all but the squeel" then you'd like several of the things mentioned here.

I will admit to never having it, but lungs, liver, heart, oatmeal stuffed a sheep's stomach and boiled to death...???? I'd say that, yeah, some good Scotch should be involved.

I do need to point out that haggis, balut, and the like are truly "unusual" foods. Monkey gland sauce is normal food--basically a BBQ sauce--with a weird name. Please do try it!

When my kids were young we were camping when my son and I thought it would be funny to pull a prank on my daughter (2 years younger than my son). We had a good string of trout and told her that people pay big money for the eye balls. She fell for it. She insisted on eating all of the eye balls. As an adult she now knows it was a prank, she still thinks they are a delicacy. I haven't tried one yet. I don't think I could wrestle one away from her even if I wanted to try it.
