My better half taught me this years ago. If you are thickening a gravy or whatever with a cornstarch slurry, put the (not hot) liquid and the cornstarch in a small Tupperware-ish container (say one cup size or less). Put the lid on and vigorously shake for a few seconds. No lumps, no fuss, no whisk.
Also, if you let the slurry sit for a while, be sure and reshake before pouring into the gravy as the cornstarch does settle out over time.
