Well, there went my salsa….stupid blender….

I did everything right (save one little thing). My favorite green salsa is Chili Pepper Madness’ one. It’s so simple….12 ounces of jalapeño, 4 ounces of red onion, five garlic cloves, two serranos, two tsp of salt, and 1/2 cup of neutral oil.

Simmer the jalapeños and onion in water until they are fork tender and just start turning a dull green.

Dump everything into a blender and, well, blend.

It was going so well. I took the top off to scrape down the sides, put the top back on, and continued to blend….except this time, I leaned on the top.

Suddenly, the little plastic top that rests on the rubber lid fell down into the salsa — it wasn’t in the locked position—and the blades made quick work of that.

Now my salsa has bits of plastic all in it. I can’t eat this. Out it goes.

Thankfully, I have an HEB which carries their green salsa called That Green Sauce and it is a decent approximation, just not as hot as I’d like.

Stupid blender. And by stupid blender, I mean stupid human who forgot to lock the lid. Won’t be making that mistake again….especially as I no longer have a plastic piece to lock.

You can now dilute with vinegar and use a mace

Speaking of mace, I fully expect to blend something super spicy and now that I have no complete blender top, will end up pepper-spraying myself.

Michael_in_TX that’s what a folded kitchen towel is for.

Yes, bunched up towel, as I recall, my Mom operated a blender throughout my entire childhood using this method.

      No tomatillos?

For this salsa, I prefer it without. I love tomatillos for their thickining factor, but they add too much acidity.

Awe! That sucks. Well, since you're on the hunt for a new blender, Vitamix! We love ours, and it's an Ohio company! Ninja's are rated just behind them, but they're foreign made.

Spend a couple weeks looking to estate sales first! I got a Kitchen Aid blender for $9. It’s not a new Vitamix, but it’s powerful enough and I saved $400 (or more).

Mosca, we got the 5200 Standard - Getting Started model. $405, so you saved $396 to be exact :-) The greatest thing about them? They blend so fast, you can literally heat soup in them.

dpearce If I were much younger I’d probably get one, but at this age it’s just not a good idea. Gotta amortize the cost over time, and it just doesn’t work.

      Bah.

I did the thing where I accidentally pushed the pulse button with the top open and my face over it, with habaneros in there. Got them up my nose.

I’m glad I reflexively shut my eyes.

Damn, that's too bad. If you have to replace the blender look for one like mine: My little plastic blender top has a wide rim in the middle so it can't fall in.

Cover lid hole with tin foil. Cover that with duct tape.

OR - just go buy some Mateo's Salsa (Texas made) and add enough hot juice to reach your level of thermal agitation. I haven't tried every commercial salsa available in my local grocery stores, but of all that I have tried, Mateo is the best.

Mateo’s definitely is one of the best, along with Kylito’s. dubob Try Kylito’s Hot if you can find it, also Texas made.

Love our Vitamix! Wife and kids make smoothies like crazy with it. It's one of the few appliances that's allowed to be out on the counter.
