I really like the wifi smoke alarm idea. My alarms (I have seven in the house) are all twenty-years old, and are tied into a non-functioning ancient home security system that never worked right. The alarms are supposedly tied together or something, but I am unsure if that works. In some sense, I don't fully trust them.

Might look at replacing them with wifi models.

I like mine a lot Micheal. As Jim mentioned, getting an alert on your phone if no one’s home is great! Also, if one of the smoke detectors goes off, it signals all of them to go off and a voice from the detector will tell you which room detected the smoke. It will also tell you in the phone alert which room detected the smoke. Mine are all battery operated so no wiring was required. The batteries last a very long time, I’ve got 6 or 7 years on mine before changing them out.

      Michael,

No smoke alarm I am aware of actually functions properly after about 10 years. The sensor itself inside them, that detects the smoke particles using a small amount of radioactive material, expires and no longer functions properly, usually 7-10 years after date of manufacturing.

I would hop up on a step ladder and inspect your units closely, and see if you find an expiration date. It may be inside the compartment for the backup battery, even if it is part of a wired system.

Here is a random article in case folks are wondering WHY you need to replace your smoke alarms every 10 years, regardless of whether they are wired or battery powered:

                Thanks folks!

The smoke smell is close to gone. I put a high volume Shark air purifier in two places in the house (one borrowed, one purchased), and washed down the bottom of the microwave/hood, cleaned the hood filter and replaced the furnace filters. I think in another day or so we will be good.

I used the stove tonight because it was raining, so I guess my thoughts of never cooking indoors again have worn off…

So glad it wasn't any worse. Hey, thanks for the smoke detector expire link. We recently replace all of ours that were probably pushing 20 years old - previous owners.

We use to distribute and install a residential hood suppression system. Military housing, at least back then, required then. We installed 100’s at military bases. While we haven’t needed one I have considered installing one as we grow older. No longer a distributor as we sold off that division but it is an option to know that they do exist. I did install one in my in-laws’s house when they entered their 80’s. Other companies make them too.

Guardian Fire Suppression Systems provide superior fire suppression of kitchen fires on residential ranges in commercial occupancies.

I like this but would need to swap back to a conventional hood instead of the microwave/convection/hood combo unit we have now.

Happy it wasn’t worse. We do have ADT but have been thinking of cancelling, maybe not now.

about a year ago, I put some potatoes on to boil, then had someone contact me for work (was working at home at the time). I ran to my PC and helped them, but then as we all do, I got side tracked with other things. Then I was smelling something and didn’t think too much about it. Then all the sudden I remembered I had potatoes boiling. Suffice it to say, I had to re-boil some potatoes.

It can happen even while at home! Always check stove and remember you have it on.
