I once asked a group of 100 whether they read the instructions before putting something together or whether they tried to put it together without the instructions. It was a 50/50 split. I think we have a 50/50 split here. And then, there are people like me who sometimes does and sometimes doesn’t. That includes both of these areas.
Contrary to cooking, I ALWAYS read the instructions! Even a new car; I’ll take a day where I sit in the drivers seat and start on page 1 of the owners manual, and touch every single control. Even stuff like the wipers and horn and windows.
Yes, I have a notebook dedicated for this. I track external temps/humidity, grill temp, and food temps at different times. I also track what I've done (wrap, baste, turn...) and observational details about the meat. I use the data to improve future cooks.
I don't keep a log. Guess I'm just not wired that way. However there have been times that I wish I would have recorded for myself a few general instructions--usually when I'm trying a new dish--to guide me if I want to repeat that particular cook. I'm thinking of a pot of steamed mussels I did sometime ago with one of my brothers. It turned out exceptionally well but it was definitely a collaboration between the two of us, what ingredients we had on hand, and a few other factors. It's those times I wish I would have made some notes. My brother has been having cognitive issues so asking for his help in recreating that particular dish hasn't gone anywhere.
So, will I start keeping a log? Prolly not...I'm just not wired that way.
