I'm having some family over this Sunday for dinner. There will be nine or ten of us. One is a serious vegetarian. One other is an on-again off-again vegetarian. We have a pork shoulder I'm going to smoke for pulled pork. I'm looking for options the the two vegetarians in the group. We have some salmon and some shrimp we could make, but that's kind of a hassle. Totally different type of cook. I'm hoping for something "barbecuey" to go along with the pulled pork.
I'm also considering making some beans from scratch. We like Alton Brown's The Once and Future Beans, but they have a pound of bacon in them. Anyone have a good vegetarian barbecue baked beans recipe?

Reason: Making more than one bean... :)
Hello friends,
So I’m planning on hosting a bbq for some friends/ colleagues. A couple of which do not eat meat, including fish and poultry.
I’m planning on smoking a few different meats, pastrami, turkey breast, and sausages.
Can anyone offer any suggestions for the meatless folk? The only thing I can come up with, is
I have bought canned jackfruit which I seasoned and smoked. Then I shredded it, sauced it, and served it like pulled pork sliders. It was actually not bad and a very reasonable substitute.
Lentil pate would be tasty with an artisan cracker. Just cook super thick and mash with chopped flavors (spring onions, herbs, cilantro). Add a bit of mustard.
My fave BBQ beans are a can each of pintos, red kidney beans and black beans. Wash and drain. Mix in grill safe pot with a jar of your favorite BBQ sauce. My personal favorite is Head Country Original. Cook on the smoker until as thick as you want. Of course meat can be added (brisket or pork), but the beans stand alone just fine.

I was vegetarian at one time, for several years, in the late 1980s-early 90s. Gave it up when I became anemic, and also was hard to follow in my medical resident lifestyle. Still, I know an awful lot of people that still are. Several relatives. Jackfruit is indeed a common substitute, not just for meat in general, but you can actually find it already prepared as pulled pork sub pretty easily. Places like Wal-Mart and Sprouts generally have it. I would be careful serving a "copy", however, if you don't know the people you are serving are receptive to that. Some are, but (at least of those I know) some do not want processed substitutions made to copy a popular non-veg option. Same with the Beyond meat subs. I would definitely tend more toward the mushrooms. Big portobellos grilled, etc, as already mentioned, or even mushroom and/or bean burgers, can be grilled outside and are pretty tasty. Lot of recipes online.
My nephews wife was a vegetarian. She ate before she came over or brought her own food. I was told not to bother trying to accommodate her, which was fine with me.
Grilled radicchio salad? I also like the mushroom idea.
