You think after 32 years, you'd know someone.... :D

I was away at a University event this evening so my wife was left to fend for herself. She wanted to order from our usual Thai place, but alas, it has closed! (Thai Cottage on Bay Area for those of yall in Houston.) She she tried a different place and ordered some chicken curry.

It was good, she reported, but a bit too spicy for her tastes. It was all mine.

I got home and sampled a bite. Yes, rather spicy, but then I noticed something....something very troubling. One of the predominant flavors was coconut milk. My wife is severely allergic to coconuts; so much so that it could kill her.

Confused that I was not face-to-face with the Galveston County Coroner, I yelled upstairs, "you do know this has coconut milk in it?"

"Coconut milk is fine; it's the actual coconut that gives me problems."

    What? WHAT? WHAT?!

All these years.....all these thirty-two freaking years (met in 1992, married in 2000), and coconut milk is fine?! So for the twenty-plus years that I've been into cooking.....I have....I have been putting off all of those curry dishes because they required coconut milk because I thought it would hurt her.....I've done this for two decades........

My poor tacos. My life is about to turn into the entire continent of India for the next several years.

    Let's curry, yall.

That is neat. I love getting a fresh coconut from the store and then complaining about all the work.

Well that is interesting that she can handle coconut milk but not actual coconut. Interesting. Does she have ANY problem with coconut milk, like in quantity?

My wife is allergic to fish. No, no shellfish, which is what everyone asks. Fish fish. The oil in fish, specifically - if it's fried super duper dry, she can eat it, but obviously, it's very unappetizing that way, so why bother?

And she grew up on a Caribbean island. lol Yup. Naturally, fish is a big staple in the diet of most people in Saint Vincent & the Grenadines, but she cannot eat it. She breaks out in hives, her lips swell, etc. It's not a life-threatening reaction, but certainly something annoying and embarrassing when out in public. So we always have to ask at restaurants - "Is the crab real crab or imitation crab?" When the waitstaff member gets the deer in the headlights look and starts stumbling over an explanation, she just moves on and says never mind. lol. Sometimes they'll go back and ask the cook if there is fish in the lobster bisque or something, mostly the waitstaff doesn't know when we ask.

But yeah - all the shellfish she wants, she loves shrimp, crab and lobster. But no fishy fish. And yes, she's tried a ton - sword, marlin, shark, etc. She can eat tuna out of a can if it's in spring water, apparently this has had enough of the oils washed out it is ok for her - but not fresh tuna.

It works out ok, since I typically don't like fish, of nearly any kind. So when we visit her family back home, if they're doing something with fish in it they have to make something else for her so I just say, "I'll have what she's having." Works great. lol

Get the heck out of here. I am also allergic to fish. Regular fish. I love shellfish. And my reactions to fish are just about identical. And I used to be able to eat tuna packed in water in tuna salads, but I tried it recently and it set my mouth to itching something terrible. I have a cousin that is also allergic, but other than that your wife is the only other person I have run across with this affliction.

Crab spelled with a "K" is not real crab. I found out the hard way lol.
