Sounds like she's including Orange County property taxes in the cost of production.

The cost of the trip to Belize for that tan?
I'm not a pro, but we used to have chickens and I think we might've spent $200 or so for supplies, maybe not even that. Always initial overhead starting anything up...but $87 avg per egg is ludicrous.

Yeah, pretty dumb. I like eggs, and I like chickens (there's not a creature on this planet that doesn't) so I'm building a chicken setup from scratch (no pun intended) next spring. I'll have plenty of scrap from my house build, but with all of the appropriate infrastructure I figure I'll sink an easy $1k into it. Some quick, non-amortized math for my needs for the first year is about $28/dozen. I'll probably break even in 4 years or so, but the value for me is built in. Exponentially so if I introduce a rooster or 2 and have meat birds, but that's a different ball of wax, as they say. Plus, I can do it without the expense of designer clothing or extravagant lifestyle!

You will not regret raising chickens. We have 8 laying hens and up to 100 quail now. It is reassuring knowing where at least a portion of the food is coming from.

And I thought Eric Burdon was an animal, ComfortablyNumb. I can't keep up with pop culture...

I know they aren’t the greatest chickens to get but I’m going to put in my two cents worth for some game chickens. We had some of them growing up. A game rooster is worth it for entertainment alone. He will walk around all day with an attitude. The hens will roost in your trees if you let them. A hens will just disappear one day, she’s built a nest somewhere and will be back with chicks soon. They take care of themselves like a wild bird would. I like them!
