“As Many As You Can Fit”

    Challenge accepted kid.

I have committed to cooking 4 racks of STL ribs for J-Melt ‘s glorious Meat-up. I asked my daughter if she wanted some ribs too and her response was “as many as you can fit”.

So, how many rib racks can I realistically fit on the PK300 and a large BGE? I can grab a rib rack or two. The IKEA ones recommended by realdocBBQ look to have room for at least one more rack than the Amazon ones.

Heya everyone! I wanted to get some feedback on a rib rack I would like to purchase. I currently have a 22" weber kettle and it allows me to get 2 racks on with my slow n sear. I would like to be able to cook several more racks in the kettle and the rib rack seems to be the way to go. However, there are quite a few

I can try the spiral approach too if everyone thinks it is more effective.

You can do four on the BGE with the Ceramic Grill Store Rig!

$180 might be a bit rich for this effort. I assume this is it?

STEbbq That’s it. It provides a lot of flexibility like cooking direct with a raised grate. A more economical choice would be the Woo with the extender, but as Mosca wrote you will need to section the ribs to fit. The Woo provides raised grill cooking, too, and it will hold your diffuser making it easy to lift everything out to add more charcoal or smoking wood.

Large BGE is 4 with a circular rack, or in tiers, 2 on the bottom and 2 on the top, cut into halves and puzzled onto the grates. Don’t know about the PK.

A circular rack is the spiral + skewer right? I am not sure if I have a second level for the BGE. What does it look like?

You can FIT a bunch more. That Egg could hold 10. Actually cooking an edible product is another story.

I am hoping to get to maybe 7-8 racks. That would probably be enough.

I have the weber rib rack that I have used on my weber kettle that you can borrow if it’s helpful! They would probably need to be used in conjunction with another rack.

A rib rack will increase the number, but I personally would rather not cook on one because saucing is problematic.

LA Pork Butt I put sauce on the side for ribs and let folks serve themselves. No sauce while on smoker.

That is 4 or 5 racks, depending on how big and meaty.

Hey Meathead , can I use this ring and some skewers to hang ribs in the BGE? Can you help me visualize the set up?

Pretty sure you can do that. I bought some flat skewers with hooks for hanging in Amazon that I used for Tandoori cooking on my egg. Did you get my old egg? It had the skewers.

I did Meathead. Ok. I will go out there and look at the setup and skewers. Thank you!

Keep in mind if you go that route of the Ikea/Amazon expandable ones for pot lids, if they're large racks, you'll need 2 sets of expanding holders. Hell, I'd probably use two anyways. Just using them in the middle leaves you with floppy racks leaning all over the place - which is also my complaint about MOST traditional 'rib racks'. I just hate 'em.

      Or....

If you can find a way to fit 'em on your Egg, you can borrow these:

Right now I think I have a set up below. What do you think? If not ideal, I think I will do 2 IKEA racks.

I appreciate all this effort for ribs, but I figured you’d be making BBQ appropriate waffles on-site 😉. Hush puppy waffles? ABT waffles?

Hush puppy waffles sound interesting. I am also wondering if I can make small raspberry pies now. I think I have more or less done ABT waffles already with a similar flavor profile. I have to do some research.

Hush puppies are definitely doable so I just have to be in the mood. Raspberry turnovers are probably better than cobbler because I can have pastry on the top and bottom. Two raspberry turnovers per waffle cook are probably doable to fill the device fully.

Either sounds great, as do the ribs.

So, I think I have two levels on the BGE now. Do I need to insert the half circle plates below to create that two zone or will this set up be sufficient? I am wondering if the ribs will fit on the second level when the Egg closed.

I also looked at the skewers. I think with the bottom of the skewers touching the fire grate, the ribs will clearly be burned so I think the two-level set up would be ideal.

Looking more closely at the photos, I noticed you have a fishbone charcoal grate which is great for airflow when looking to get to high temps and grilling. But, if you have the original BGE grate with holes it works better for low and slow cooks like briskets and
Boston Butts. The fishbone grate should be fine for ribs especially at 275.

LA Pork Butt the OG grate wasn’t salvageable so I had to replace it.

Mosca and LA Pork Butt I will get out the measuring tape and measure everything and do the paper trick. I’ll also do the full diffuser. I feel reasonably confident that 7 is a baseline here with 8 a possibility across both the PK and BGE. Thank you again!!!

I know your not using a a Weber Smokey Mountain but some guy managed to stuff 22 racks of baby back ribs in one smoker using a Hunsaker circular rib rack. Kind of silly, but i have to give him credit for taking on the challenge.

I ended up with 6 mainly because Costco sold 3 to a pack and I didn’t want to ask Amanda to go to another store for one more rack of ribs. It worked out perfectly as I did 4 on the PK and 2 on the BGE.

I probably could have got one more on the Egg. However, it would have required a new setup process as my original setup for 3 racks in the Egg didn’t work once I placed the diffuser in. So glad I stuck with 6.

As noted before, they turned out great! My wife was raving about them and was glad to hear that we have leftovers in our freezer. More reason for us to get a sous vide!
