    New York and California WTF

I'm all for environment awareness and doing my part but this takes it too far.

The spring or 2024 has arrived and it is time to break out the grill, smoker or bbq. But what does New York State have planned for the future of your propane or charcoal grill?

    #2
Many people who speak, and try to act on protecting the environment know nothing about it. This is the result.

They are not banning grills or outdoor grilling at all!!! This is a misleading and inflammatory article title. 🔥🔥🐿️

They are banning wood fired pizza though. Which, in my mind is sacrilegious.

“There are rumors that a statewide ban on various gas and coal/wood fired items may be looming in New York State.”

that’s all it is. Simmer down.

You’re wrong. Pizzerias gonna get slammed. City now gonna offer tax incentives to comply w 75% emissions cut.

Tax incentives are not a ban.

Can adjust and collect the incentive or continue with business as is.

Texas is still accepting invitees. You are all invited to Texas to grill and smoke as you please. That smoke smells like freedom to me. This post will be destroyed for being too political soon and it probably is.

      1) Not gonna happen. The "article" is inflammatory clickbait. It even says it's just "rumors".

      2) California isn't banning propane. It's banning single-use propane tanks. You're fine as long as you use refillable tanks.

This type of reporting is EXACTLY why I tried to teach my students to be discerning connoisseurs of information.

        1) There is a huge difference between NYC and the rest of NYS. The state will never, I'll bet you $50 right here in front of everyone, ban gas or charcoal outdoor grills.

        2) NYC hasn't banned coal or woodfire pizza and matzoh ovens, either. They've mandated emissions cuts, which means flue filters on wood and coal chimneys for ovens installed prior to 2016.

Just make it too expensive, after "C", for restaurants to get back on the green side of ,bad choice of words, of the ledger. Peeps fully invested are gonna pay n pay til they shout uncle.

RichieB I admit I came down kind of hard on the article. I hope you'll accept that I didn't mean to sound like I was coming down on you. I apologize if it came across that way.

PGH_RAM, we're good. I understand it's all speculation regarding New York. I'm not in California, so I can't speak for current laws and restrictions. Maybe some of our Pitmasters there can chime in. All I do know is that it's overkill. Our charcoal and wood burns aren't a major impact to our climate issues. Again I'm not there but it said new construction will not include gas lines. Will that include propane too, if it is true? I have a 500 gallon underground tank. Heat, H.W. F.P. and gasser.

Some big cities in Canada have banned wood-burning stoves & ovens, including restaurants and pizza joints. It's to help the smog levels they say, and the laws there are nothing new. Montreal Smoked Meat, essentially Canada's version of pastrami with a more potent rub but less smoke, is often cooked in electric or gas smokers where wood is not the fuel due to the laws.

Neither one of those articles mentions a ban of any sort. In fact, the first article even points out that businesses can apply for variances if they can't meet the target. According to the second article, no one has applied yet even though this law has been on the books since De Blasio was mayor.

It’s happening. A 75% reduction on emissions will effectively ban/close most pizzerias. You’re clinging to the word “ban”.

These are news articles. News articles are meant more to stir up emotions, then to publish the real truth. Before I would get too caught up in this, I would read the law and the regulation derived from the law.

A lot of crazy ideas get floated. The wood fired pizza mandated 70% reduction in emissions sounds like a real possibility which is absolutely ridiculous IMHO but oftentimes the public pushes back and these ideas die on the vine.

"New York City has quietly approved a controversial green plan to require pizzerias and matzah bakeries using decades-old wood- and coal-fired stoves to cut their smoky pollutants by 75%.

Mayor Eric Adams’ Department of Environmental Protection said the fresh edict takes effect April 27, with some city businesses having already coughed up more than $600,000 for new smoke-eating systems in anticipation of the expected mandate."

Don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining. This is a disaster for pizza restaurants.

History may not repeat itself, but it does echo. Every civilization that has ultimately failed has done so at the hands of the political class cowing the citizenry, too many of whom don't pay attention to the signs.
