WSJ Article on Women and Grilling with Meathead Quote!

    and David Parrish !

Gift link so should work, I think.

Many women who have watched me grill have asked if I’m worried about lighting my eyebrows on fire,” says Dalkin, whose coming cookbook is called “What’s Gaby Cooking: Grilling All the Things.” “They are intimidated by the grill. They need to learn how to turn it on.”

The grill might be the last cooking outpost where men are firmly in control. Meathead Goldwyn, whose Pitmaster Club for grilling and barbecue enthusiasts has more than 15,000 paying members worldwide, says men represent about 85% of membership.

More than 90% of U.S. homeowners own a grill or an outdoor cooking device that needs to be fired up, according to the National Barbecue & Grilling Association. The association has more than 28,000 social-media followers, 82% of whom are men. “It’s definitely a male-dominated pastime,” adds David Parrish, chief executive of SnS Grills, a maker of charcoal grills and accessories.

I don't understand this at all. Women can cook, grill, and BBQ too. For Good or Bad no woman has touched my Traeger. SWMBO likes it when I BBQ for her. She likes it because it keeps me out of Her kitchen. LOL

My wife runs the Silverbac, she is great at grilling on it and cooking in general. But she has zero interest in starting a fire, even a charcoal fire. So I'd say our household is 90% me, 10% her in regards to grilling. 100% to 0% in regards to smoking.

I get it, I'm not big on getting on my hands and knees and scrubbing the floors, but she doesn't mind it. I do vehicle repair, she vacuums. I think a lot of it is how we each grew up, what seems 'normal' in our respective worlds. Starting a fire, changing oil, and scrubbing floors isn't hard, we just tend to gravitate toward and assume the roles similar to what our moms & dads did I think.

Installing, sanding and finishing hardwood floors, had me running a vac one third of the time. These days even a hair dryer drives me up the wall.

My wife is the cook during the week for the most part, as I am in the office thrice a week. She’s a great cook too. Weekends are my time to shine. I usually incorporate fire somehow but not always. My wife uses our Genesis on a regular basis, especially in the summer. She hates charcoal and everything about it and could care less about my kettle or WSM. She’s hesitant to use the Silverbac, I think because my relatives complained about the Traeger at our lake house when we first got it. If I didn’t know how to use it either I would also complain when the 🔥 goes out because it wasn't cleaned out 🤨. But I’ll get her on board soon.

My wife was a little hesitant at first with the Silverbac because of the fan noise. Once I explained to her it's not much different from a gas grill, just a touch nosier but it's only a fan, she was on board.

In our house I buy the outdoor cooking gear. My husband and I share the Weber Spirit. I run the smokers and the pizza oven. I also pilot our 40' Trawler and installed the nav gear but he takes care of the diesel. We are true outliers.

I saw the article on the front page today !! Hah. When you give lessons on how to turn it on, I will volunteer my wife.

Currently she's in charge of doing the crossword puzzle while I cook.

Nobody is coming for my tongs at this house. Nobody is even coming for the butter knife.

The kitchen and the deck are mine, including keeping everything spotless. The laundry room is hers. And we split the rest. It works for us.

Mrs. Prof leaves the fire to me. She does the sides.

Yep, same here. The down side is I am not getting enough practice making sides.

My wife is an excellent cook and baker. She has no desire to grill or smoke anything. Together we can put on a great meal. I can bring steak and baked potatoes to the table while she adds homemade bread and an apple pie.

I felt the WSJ article was trying generate attention by pushing the concept that women are intentionally left out of grilling by being told that it is a male only activity. My wife is an extremely good cook however she does not like lighting charcoal or smoking. ( My practice of coming into the house after grilling and smelling like a smokestack probably doesn't help) This was her decision and certainly not mine. As a result, I do almost all of the outdoor cooking. This seems likely the case with many AR members as indicated above. It is also clear, by the many women outdoor cooks on AR, that they can and do plenty of superb outdoor grilling and smoking. The division of cooking seems more a personal decision than one forced by society rules - at least in my household.

Since my wife doesn't like food cooked over charcoal nevermind smoked, the Kettle and PBJ are out. No interest in the Spirit. If she wants something cooked, I'm asked. She loves grilled veggies and chicken. I do vacuum rugs as she has some physical limitations. The rest of the cleaning for the most part is hers including laundry. I've offered but it is a big no.

I should note my daughter, mother of 3 does share the grilling with her husband on a gasser.

I keep "threatening" my wife that one of these days I am going to make her cook a steak from start to finish. I would love for her to use the grill sometime but as of yet she hasn't cooked on any of the grills. I did get her to cook some pancakes (maybe pancakes? Might have been scrambled eggs) on the Blackstone and my 4 year old said "I didn't think ladies could cook on the griddle".

My wife can out cook me on any device she chooses. Fortunately, she allows me to do the outdoor cooking to appease my fragile ego.
