Most assuredly has altered my life - immeasurably for the better! Both BBQ in general, and AR specifically!Originally posted by Meathead View PostThis thread is heartwarming.
I can't even figure up how much this hobby has changed my life in the last 8-10 years.
I hope it continues to evolve for the next 10 or 20.

Yes!!
First and foremost - learning to BBQ and the support from this community was a big part of us surviving the Covid lockdown.
It's also probably one of the least expensive hobbies my squirrel brain, hyper fixation has fallen into.
This community in particular is fantastic - open, welcoming, willing to teach.....AND focuses on data driven solutions. More of the world needs to operate like this.
There has also been an objectively measurable impact on my waistline..... Which we're working on.

Maybe not life altering, but definitely life improving,
I have had a cooker of some type since 1978. Had brisket and standing rib roast sorted before discovering AR.
Lurked on the free side for a long time, then likewise in the Pit. A tremendous breadth and depth of resources are available here, reflecting an enormous effort by Meathead and his acolytes.
An additional feature, which I very much appreciate, is the civilized, mostly apolitical, nature of the off topic threads. The moderators do an excellent job. Thank you!

Yes! I gained 50lbs once I discovered how delicious smoked meats are. Still trying to shake it. This is the year!!!
I bought a primo bc of this site. I’ve really learned a lot since 2016 and my food game is 1000 times better. In the last year or so I’ve pivoted away from such a hard focus on outside cooking and now it is a great part of my repertoire.

Absolutely! I used BBQ to save my life! Okay, that might be a tad dramatic, but it was a great hobby for me when I decided to get sober. When I got out of the hospital and 2 months of in-patient recovery, I moved to my buddies farm. I was living in a bunk house and I was working on the farm. I loved it. It also allowed me to dive in to outdoor cooking. I alwasy loved to cook, but I never really knew how to do it correctly.
I needed a hobby to keep me busy and a place to pour my energy while I got back on my feet. (Although I would argue, I was never really on my feet in the first place but that is another discussion) I wanted to master ribs. So. naturally, I found Amazingribs.com. Once the farming season wore down and my buddies family wintered somewhere warm, I was by myself, looking after the farm in the winter months; all I did was make BBQ. Literally every single day. (Mind of an addict, we tend to go all in or nothing at all) It became an awesome activity that I could share with people and I could be creative and do somtehing constructive. Then I found the forum and that is where it all really changed. I got sooooo much help and guidance from people.
I truly mean this.......I would not be where I am right now in life if it were not for BBQ and this community. Now I am lucky enough to work for all of you. I kind of see it as a way for me to give back to the community that has done so much for me. I never forget how lucky I am to be apart of the world of BBQ and this wonderful group of people.
Plus, everyone loves being around someone who can cook. That has been the greatest gift of all, being able to share it with people, teach people and hang out with like minded people!

Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
I’ve thought about it for a couple days.
I don’t think bbq has changed my life as much as Amazing Ribs has. I’m not talking about the community, although that has changed my life, too. But the approach to food and cooking that I picked up from Meathead is so deep and pervasive that I can really say it’s changed my entire demeanor toward the subject, in the kitchen, on the deck, in the grocery store, everywhere. I’m both more exacting and more relaxed, I pay attention more but I’m also less strict, I see things as more of a whole while concentrating on details.
It’s very zen, but in a very hedonistic way. It’s celebrating the total experience as a natural and inevitable process, going with the flow but in control of the stream. Things happen, the way I want them to and when I want them to. And if they don’t, well, there’s another direction to go with everything.
Oh, and stuff tastes better, too. That’s a plus. A big one.

Retired, living in Western Mass. Enjoy music, cooking and my family.
Current cookers Weber Spirit 3 burner with a full insert griddle added. A 22" Kettle with vortex, SnS and a Smokey Joe. The most recent addition is a Pit Barrel Jr with bird hanger, 4 hooks and cover. ThermoWorks Smoke 2 probe, DOT, 2 ThermoPops and a Thermapen MK4. A Thermoworks RFX Gateway 2 probe meat thermometer.
No not life changing but certainly an enjoyable growth and hobby. I always had a gasser. My Genesis (may it R.I.P). Once I joined the Pitmaster Club in April 18' things changed. In the Spring of 19' I purchased my Master Touch Kettle. Then as time went on the accessories were added. Eventually a Smokey Joe and my PBJ. When I destroyed the Genesis with a burn off with Grill Grates on (don't ever do that), I got the Spirit 3 Burner.
If anything altered my outlook, it is "The Pit". The food focus, cooking and eventually baking was a real injection of joy and growth for me. Plus, I can now get weather reports from around the globe on a daily basis.
Since I retired in July 17' and even prior to that I have become an introvert. I had friends in our previous location and was a real social extrovert. I've never sought friends here and don't miss it. I have some really great neighbors but I don't consider friends in the true sense of the meaning. I look to you as my friends. The ones I can share a multitude of life aspects. A benefit is, it doesn't include the things around us that provide a whole other view of people and life. Better out there than in here.
Thanks for letting me share.
