By growing up eating food I did not enjoy at all.

I took every cooking class available when I was in high school. The teacher had a program where older students had the opportunity to be "supervisors" of classes of younger students, so I did that too..
spent a couple of years working in food service right out of high school where I learned a lot of prep techniques. I also learned cooking for a living took all of the fun out of it, so found other work...
spent the next 5 years living the bachelor life, cooking simple stuff for one on occasion, but mostly living on takeout. After I got married, the wife and I shared cooking duties until our son came along. Mrs Finster started working nights which left me to do the cooking...
it's just kinda grown from there, learning more and more as I went along through trial and error combined with the advent of the internet, and cable tv cooking shows
Fast forward 20+ years, and here I am. Replaced my old worn out gasser with a Weber kettle, caught the charcoal bug, which eventually led me to buying a used PBC, and finally stumbling onto this incredible community.
The rest as they say, is history!!

I learned to cook by making every possible cooking mistake between the ages of 18 and 45. I'm a slow learner.

Both my parents worked and Mom was the ‘sandwich lady’ at the local Bridge club where she was also a director. She was a great home cook and the message in my neighborhood where I grew up was, “you never pass up a meal at the Richardsons”.

When Mom got old, the children took over making the holiday dinners. My siblings and I started to cook Mom’s dishes on a regular basis. My Mother’s chicken n’ dumplings (10 minutes…no peeke) is a favorite with my kids.

I have always enjoyed cooking, reading cookbooks, taking cooking lessons, trying new things and buying cooking equipment to enhance my skills.

About 10 years ago became a KCBS judge. That really got my cooking juices going. After judging, I will walk around at talk to the competitors and ask them how they did, issues, how their equipment worked, learn anything new, etc.

Joining AmazingRibs has also upped my game. Quite a bit of knowledge on this website and their equipment review is top notch.

What is great now is that my kids tell me, “all our friends love to come over for dinner”. I overheard one of my kid’s friend say to his date when she said that the food was delicious. He responded, “yeah and they eat like this all the time”. ….. Thanks Mom.

Always nice when your kids say that it was good, but when friends of friends say that it great.

If a kid's friend brought their date to your house for dinner, the food must taste better than going to a restaurant.
