'Lab-grown' chicken meat - coming sooner than later

“Advancements in cell culture technology are enabling food developers to use animal cells obtained from livestock, poultry, and seafood in the production of food, with these products expected to be ready for the U.S. market in the near future".

Upside Foods, a California-based company that makes meat from cultured chicken cells, will be able to begin selling its products once it has been inspected by the US Department of Agriculture.

I'm not super interested in it but I think it's probably going to be a good thing in terms of feeding our growing population. We just welcomed our 8 billionth person to this world after all.

Sometime today, the global population is forecast to hit 8 billion. The U.N. calls it a milestone for humanity, made possible by advances in public health and medicine. But there are also challenges.

I have to think that cultured cells like this will result in a formed meat product that is all lean, with no intramuscular fat or marbling, unless they mix fat in somehow. I already hate boneless skinless chicken breasts for grilling - I can't imagine how dry the lab grown ones will be.

I'm sure they will add fat and salt and that it'll taste good.

Maybe they will grow as self injecting, for added juiciness to whatever this abomination is

Yeah, the lack of musculature will have a big effect on mouthfeel, I reckon... I'd definitely try it though.

It will probably satisfy those who only eat the breast...

It's all fun and games until there is an accident in the lab and the world is overtaken by FLESH EATING POULTRY ZOMBIES!

I'm way more down with this than the "impossible" offerings.

I've heard they have plans to eventually grow this stuff and use electric shock to stimulate simulated muscle development down the road. Some of the science has a second benefit of being tied to research to regrow fully functioning limbs for people!

Should also assist climate change in reducing fossil fuel usage.

How about we order some chicks in March and process them 6 weeks later and forget the lab…..?

Think bigger Mr Norcross... this really isn't about Earth or at least about Earths resource conservation or constraints, these companies could care less about populating Antartica or saving starving children wherever (ok fine some of them probably care, but the money goal...), this is long term about landing a contract for a planetary colony

Perhaps you are right and maybe I am stuck in the mud. Sometimes, it is best to learn more before casting an opinion. Point well taken...

If I can't pull the feathers off the chicken and gut it before I cut it up and roast/fry/bake/bbq it I probably will not eat it. I've learned to trust stuff out of the barnyard a LOT more than out of a lab.

                But that's just me. YMMV.
