    Polish food festival!

At St Mary’s Catholic Church, Dorrance, PA!

I mostly want to show that there are still places where thing get done "the old way". None of that premixed batter. Stuff that works. Country comfort.

    Okay, here goes.

First up: kielbasa and sauerkraut sandwich. This is definitely home made kielbasa, and it is smoked. Home made kielbasa is actually pretty common in NEPA. This is excellent. Nice smoke to it, very garlicky.

Next, haluski. For those who don’t know, that’s cabbage, noodles, onions, and buttter. I want you to look close and notice that the noodles are home made.

This is sweet sauerkraut and dumplings. Again, notice the home made spaetzel.

The potato pancakes. These are as good as potato pancakes can get, that’s all I can say. They’re crispy on the outside and just slightly gooey on the inside.

These are stuffed cabbage, we call them piggies. There’s not a lot of variation among piggies, the big thing is make them dense. They have to cut like spam, not like meat loaf. I LOVE piggies. I get the big one!

And finally, pierogies. Fridays we go to breakfast at Junie G’s, and we saw our friend Isolde who said she’d just made 80 dozen pierogies for the festival! (With help I’m sure, Isolde is pushing 80 years old.) These are obviously from scratch. I’m stuffed, I haven’t tried one yet. Maybe around halftime of tonight’s game. Each of these is about the size of a human hand, btw.

Everything looks great. I'd be all over the Kielbasa. Had a polish friend - primary school thru high school Richard Tomcyzk (think that's the right spelling) who always had the best cabannosi sausage.

holehogg that spelled right. Americanized, it’s Tom-zack like the bears quarterback from a long time ago. Real pronunciation from my gram? Tome-check.

This is bringing tears to my eyes! I’m polish and Lithuanian. You had me at the kielbasa. My late MIL called them piggies, too. My sister and I could never pronounce "gumpkies" correctly… therefore stuffed cabbage is called gumpkies.

Pronounced gawumpkis where I’m from, spelled galumpkis. I have heard em refered to as pigs in a blanket by gringos. Piggies is a new one fer me.

Here in NEPA there are dozens of markets that just sell kielbasi (and other sausages). My favorite is Tarnoski’s, Mrs Mosca likes Fetch’s. But also, Many smaller groceries have their own. Carole’s has theirs, Gerrity’s, etc. Plus Murazzi’s is made locally, Citterio’s, etc. And also lots of butchers.

Wow- this makes me hungry and brings back memories. My mom would finish the pierogies in the oven with lots of butter. We always called the stuffed cabbage, piglets in a blanket.
