    Frozen meat and weights

EDIT for clarity *I guess I didn't word this clearly enough, I don't have a problem. My protein weighed more than the label. The only slight difference in measurement between frozen and thaw is either to do with the pinhole in the bag or because I couldn't get it perfectly centered on the scale because I had to use a paper plate to contain the spill. I just wanted to take an item from a vendor that some folks have had weight issues with, show a frozen and thawed weigh in, and that's that...*

With some of the recent posts regarding frozen meat delivery companies I figured I'd do some science. My brain says frozen stuff is heavier than thawed stuff, but also that something in a sealed bag would weigh the same regardless of state.

Best I can do is grams, and unfortunately this thawed product had a pinhole leak when thawed. However I think it's also obvious I'm no longer a fan of this supplier, but the results favor them as the conversion comes out in their favor.

    Frozen

    Thawed

Regardless the grams to lbs conversion says it actually weighs more than the label.

Frozen meat will weigh more but the difference is very slight. The water and air will freeze thus making it slightly heavier.

I don't see the issue. The difference is 3 grams which is trivial and they list at 3.2lb which is 1451 grams. And there's not going to be any differnce in weight due to freezing.

"The water and air will freeze thus making it slightly heavier."

What? The air doesn't freeze, it's nowhere near cold enough to freeze air in a freezer. And the water changes state but there's not more or less so it has the same mass whether solid or liquid.

I agree water changes volume with a change in temp - it does not change weight.

ItsAllGoneToTheDogs Got it. I was confused for a bit there.

The plastic bag probably weighed 3 grams.

1466 grams is equal to 3.23 LBS. I don't see a problem. The cold attracted water from the air.

Inaccuracy of the scale, or more likely the cold temperature of the frozen specimen versus the higher temperature of the thawed one slightly affected the accuracy of the scale. It was only different by 3 grams. The law of conservation of mass dictates that mass (weight) will remain the same regardless of state (solid, liquid, or gas) within a sealed enclosure.

Their scale is certified for accuracy; can you say the same about yours?
