Full fat dairy products and saturated fats

This is an interesting article. I've always suspected that full fat dairy was in fact the better option despite being higher in calories.

Emerging evidence suggests that while saturated fat is considered unhealthy, a specific type in butter and dairy may lower risk of chronic illnesses.

Not maybe, do the research. Red meat, bacon & fat are good also. When I say do the research you have to be aware of the "funding" element.

Sadly, I'm not sure if I agree about bacon. Moderation is key in all things. I do not plan to completely swear of processed meats but I do try to make them an infrequent indulgence.

The problem with most bacon, when it comes to heart health is the amount of sodium. While we slowly seem to be coming around to the fact that not all fat is bad for heart health, I've yet to see a study that says the same about sodium. All things in moderation though, right?

Does that mean we should smoke more pork belly? 🤔

I had a mild heart attack and then an angioplasty back in 2015 and my cardiologist at that time recommended a book called Eat Bacon, Don't Jog. Excellent book full of great advice. From the Amazon Description:
"Eat Bacon, Don’t Jog shows why we should drop the carbs, embrace fat, and hang up our running shoes, with the latest science to back up its claims."

In reading you response, my first thought was how important commas are. :-)

Just ordered a copy of the book from Amazon.
I look forward to reading it

Also, the funding issue, which is valid, arises on both sides of these discussions.

Not about calories as much as it is about where you get them. Full fat calories are far better for you than sugar calories you get from snacks, processed foods, and grains. Fat allows you to run on slow sustained energy, sugar......high octane fuel....if you don't use it up quick....it packs on your body.

Fats are a natural part of human life, processed/refined sugars are not. The old food pyramid is being flipped on its head, it will take time for people to catch on.....but it is happening.

I agree with your thinking. When my diet is on point for me, I'm not eating much processed sugar or processed foods. That diet tends to be pretty low in refined carbs. However, I do try to remember to add in more whole grains. I think I don't eat enough of them.

I think people tend to lump complex carb in with sugars under the definition of carbs, so when they replace carbs with fats, they are eliminating a healthy part of their diet. Complex carbs are also slow burning energy. I try and keep my consumption of whole grains and legumes up.

Complex carbs, can be a slower burning energy, although not nearly to the extent that fats are. However, your body will make complex carbs through gluconeogenesis in the liver and kidneys. There really is no need to supplement that part of your diet. Once you become fat adapted, your body makes all the complex carbs you need.

I was just at my cardiologist Wednesday, triglycerides were high. He said don’t worry about the meats, concentrate on cutting the simple carbs like potatoes, rice, pasta, and white bread. And, exercise and lose some weight. That’s actually pretty doable, I think.

Need to get better control of my sweet tooth..

Doc said that's a bigger deal than diet anyway.

I don’t think one approach works for everybody. Gotta find something you can stick to. I lost 50 lbs since October 2021 and I wouldn’t have done it without the running shoes. Ate bread too, which is non-negotiable in my world.

I completely agree that everyone is different and we need different strategies. Nice work by the way.

Ive always adhered to the idea that fat and carbs almost dont exist together naturally in a food. Its combining them that kicks your butt.
