    Boiled peanuts

There’s a local shop here in town that makes the best boiled peanuts(dry roasted too) but isn’t exactly convenient to where I live. On weekends, they set up "roadside" type stands around town but the frequency of them being in my neck of the woods is rare.

This vendor has a world of different flavors, probably my favorites are Zing Zang Bloody Mary, Alabama Cajun, original salt and wickles pickles.

They are always the perfect texture, not mushy and just enough bite to them.

All that said, I’d love to hear other’s experiences boiling peanuts.

My thoughts can be boiled down to, "sometimes I feel like a nut . . .."

Too many jokes started to filter through my head! I was going to write "what would Meathead think of boiling your nuts?" and it just got worse….then I thought "if I actually wrote that how would Mr. Bones respond?" I started laughing even harder.

I lived in NC for some years. Boiled peanuts were a thing there. Never understood it. Didn’t like them at all.

I love boiled peanuts. Haven't found a recipe yet that tastes as good as many of those roadside stands or farmers' markets though. I've made them time and again over many, many years (since a kid, really) and can't seem to get them salty or spicy enough.

Having never had one - I take it they are boiled in shell? Are they served in shell, too?

I think they are boiled in water. Have to google it. Thanks for bringing that up.

MNy years ago there was a local morning radio show that played a little music, but it was mostly about the two hosts interacting. And they both loved boiled peanuts. I listened to them for years and finally decided that I should try boiled peanuts. I found them to be totally discusting.🤮

I think you can find peanuts in Planters. I could be wrong.

Funny I just finished a 2 pound batch yesterday. Of all the boiled peanuts I have bought off the hi ways in Mississippi, I still like a good simple salted boiled peanut. Maybe a bit of cajun spice but not much. Kinda like judging a new burger joint. I just order the meat patty and two pieces of bread.

I make mine in my insta pot. Never a day without boiled peanuts in the reefer.

I'll put pen to paper and post it! Really though there is only two parts. Tenderness comes from cooking, then saltiness comes from soaking. Kinda like crawfish.

Something most folks may not realize is that you just cannot take any old raw peanuts and boil them - they need to still be "green" in my experience. If they are dried out, they just don't boil right. I've tried it with store bought raw peanuts, and they just don't boil up like the fresh ones do, but you can usually only find those in the summer or early fall.

Boiled peanuts are something folks seem to either like a lot, or hate. Not much middle ground. Maybe it's a regional thing.

You can't make great peanuts without green peanuts. Raw will work, but they just don't have the texture. I developed a love for boiled peanuts when I lived in the Florida panhandle just a few miles south of the Georgia border.

Definitely regional thing! One of the few Southern specialties that I have not acquired a taste for. I won't even begin to describe how my wife and sister felt about them, but 'hate' is not strong enough! 🤣🤣

I can't get green peanuts, but I can get raw. My favorite seasoning is Bad Byron's Butt Rub. Make the water orange. Float the peanuts (they will sink), cook low and slow and add more water when necessary.

Sounds like something I will have to be trying! I keep a big shaker of Bad Byron's on hand and while I can't remember the last time I used it on an actual butt or ribs, I find myself using it like I would seasoned salt on a lot of other grilled foods - veggies and the like.

Good call CandySueQ, Bad Byron's is an underappreciated rub. Will have to try this.

Being a born and raised Yankee, I had never come across a boiled peanut in my life until this past year I was in Savannah for a wedding and went to a restaurant that had them on the menu. First bite was odd but once I had a few more, they had an addictive quality to them, so I can get behind the allure. Would for sure get them again if I ever come across them

My niece's husband was born in Alabama and made these for us on one of our visits. They were the most god awful things I've tasted

Growing up I loved boiled peanuts but something has changed and I’m not sure if it is my taste or they make them differently now. Maybe it was the stand I bought them from. On a roadtrip down South about a decade or so ago I bought some for myself and the kids. My love of them disappeared after the first bite.
