Sunday, my blood sugar got to 495. If you don't know, that is terrible and even dangerous - diabetic coma, organ damage, etc. I wanted to do something drastic to get it under control. I decided to do whole30. It is very restrictive, and takes some planning. But today, 5 days later, my blood sugar is 107. It works. I want to use this thread as a journal for the meals I make during these 30 days. If you have questions about my health, whole30, or any of the food you see here, feel free to ask.

Jerod Broussard that sounds like a Paleo diet to me. I lost 30 lbs. in a few months.

We were under the impression that the first week of Whole 30 is a detox, where you cut out almost everything that's fun and tasty... then, over the course of the rest of the program, you reintroduce some items back into your diet.
Whole30 isn't intended to be an ongoing diet event, but isolated to just 30 days. After those 30 days, you should be consistent enough with your habits to continue making good food choices vs bad ones.
We'll defer actual rules/info to those who've done the full plan

About 3 1/2 years ago I was at over 700 the best we could figure. My wife’s monitor kept reading HI until we got it down to 500 something over a period of about 6 hours. Long story short I went on a processed food, bread, sugar elimination program, somewhat self designed. Lost 30 lbs, kicked insulin & met-formin. Try to hold to it. It is difficult I do admit. My numbers are good if I maintain close to the "plan". I am now in the process of becoming much stricter due to the cancer thing. There is a metabolic answer within reason. Grillin & Q is no problem unless sugar is involved, which I stay away from for the most part. There is a lot more to it. I have researched intensely for the last 3 years after dabbling with it for the last 20+. Good that it worked for you as it should have. Amazing isn’t it.Last edited by FireMan; February 20, 2022, 06:20 AM.

We did this plan for a while, and it worked for us:
BREAKFAST: an egg or avocado and a slice of toast
LUNCH: Spinach salad with grilled chicken (or salmon), blue cheese crumbles, bacon crumbles. One mandarin orange. One of those bella cheese round things. Oil and vinegar dressing
SNACK: Handful of almonds
DINNER: Spinach salad, 3oz of protein prepared however you'd like
DESSERT: one hershey's dark chocolate kiss
Primary beverages: water or iced tea.
Generically speaking, no limitation on fruit/vegetables. Nothing that contains "sugar" on the label
during socializing: one glass of water for every glass of wine/beer throughout the event. One "cheat" day where we would have some semblance of a normal day
this meal plan is boring, but it works.

I've looked at whole30 in the past but the elimination bit feels restrictive. I get that you do it for 30 days, then reintroduce things slowly... I should probably try it. But I can't see myself never eating bread or pasta or any grain again if the diet showed that grains were an issue. I need to dive into it more because I don't think things are either absolutely an issue and you should never eat them or not an issue at all, but can be in between.
That said... 495 is a very high blood sugar reading and it's awesome that you are trying something like this. Definitely food for thought especially given the significant drop you've seen already. Keep up updated - love to know more.Last edited by rickgregory; February 19, 2022, 05:47 PM.

I'll be honest, I'm curious about two things. First, is this effective for you just because Whole30 eliminates grains etc and thus is, de facto, a low carb diet (i.e. would eliminating carbs be just as effective? And second, how easy or hard it is to keep up after the 30 days are up.
I do think the 'reset your habits' part of Whole30 is really valuable. Maybe the most valuable thing about it.Last edited by rickgregory; February 20, 2022, 12:51 PM.
