    I burned my thumb today

I thought I’d share a lesson I learned today. I grabbed a pot holder that had a wet spot on it to get a heavy CI skillet out of a 450 F oven. About half way out of the oven I realized my thumb was burning. That wet spot was turning to steam and doing a number on me. I couldn’t let go at that point and had to follow through with getting it on top of the stove. I have a lovely steam burn on my thumb now. The fact that there was a wet spot on the pot holder didn’t alarm me at all. I just wanted to share that under the right circumstances a wet pot holder or glove is not nearly as safe as a dry one.

Good advice. And sorry for you being the one who had to bring this to light.
    That’s gonna hurt for a while. 😔

I remember in boy scouts I was going to wet some paper towels to grab a skillet off the fire and was immediately instructed not to do so and why.

Very nice that they told you why also.

Glad ya came out as well as ya did, Brother
Steam is a most Evil Burn, Indeed...

Might be only a .177 bb sized patch, there, on yer thumb (hypothetical, but experience-based), but, reckon it feels jus like it goes right on into yer Soul

Have enjoyed its 'Kiss", far more many times than I could have ever even wished for... Mostly Stack Steamers, Steam Kettles, but a few scores of additional experiences, in Industrial siturations

The number of times I've burnt myself is beyond count. I still (!) think that "I'm just gonna reach in through the firebox door and adjust that log", and boom! The inside of my lower arm touches the firebox door. It's not looking good, let me tell ya.

I cant even begin to count the number of burns and cuts, lol. I still remember the one where i was pan frying some breaded pork chops. Picked up a chop to flip it over with tongs, dropped it, splashed burning hot oil all over my arm. That one sucked.

Glad to hear you didn't drop that pot. Sorry about the burn, though.

Thanks for sharing. I haven’t heard of that, and it’s easy to see how it could happen.

All I can do is say "ouch" and as the recipient of many burns in my lifetime, sympathize. I'll be checking to make sure my pot holders are dry too before use!

Good to know, sorry you got steamed!
I stepped on a soldering iron once, never left it on the floor since 😳

Stepping on a soldering iron would be a lot worse than my thumb. Good grief that hurts to think about.

I’ve done that after putting a hot pad on a wet counter. It’s a lesson you learn once. I put the hot pads back in the drawer, check the counter is dry, or check the hot pad before reaching in the oven to make sure they’re dry. I hope you heal quickly. Those types of burns seem to be in places that continually get poked and hurt for a while.
