Reminded me of when we lived in Panama City, FL. We owned and lived in a 60 X 12 mobile home and the mobile home park we lived in had 50 pecan trees in it. The park owner had permission from the state to shoot any and all grey squirrels he found in the park. He also had a permit to discharge a firearm within the city limits, but they restricted him to a 22-rifle using bird shot ammunition. Yes, that does exist. He was deadly and successful every day of the week. All the expired tree rats were disposed of in the nearest garbage can they were killed next to. He killed hundreds of them every year, if not over a thousand. The pecans were a cash crop for the park owner, and he hated those tree rats with a passion.

Yakima, WA. Snoozing in recliner. Fireplace insert handles start rattling, moving a bit. I basically levitated out of chair. Got some surgical tubing I have used to bed gunstocks, tied insert handles together. Daughter due home from college in few days, so I waited for her to help me. Casting about for a response, asked myself "what would Uncle Fred do?" Fred was a true eccentric, favored dynamite to relocate stream channels leading to Niobrara River in Nebraska, used his 30-06 WWI Enfield to lance lump jaw on cows, accidentally blew up his small house using dynamite to knock off lathe and plaster.

Lizzie shows up. I have a plan. Drop lit highway flare, newspaper, and kindling down chimney, Did so. Fussing with kindling, smoke billowing out, Lizzie screams. I look up, a critter is coming out, runs around masonry cap surrounding flu. I smack at it with kindling stick, miss, critter runs off roof to tree. What the heck was that?

Lizzie with her Google fu figures out it is a bushy tailed woodrat. I open insert. There is a very solid nest in there. Turns out it is called a mizzen. twigs and urine, like concrete. Try to scrape it out, but there were no.9 nails sticking up through it.Weird.

Turns out son Colin when he was young determined to catch Santa, pounded nails into board, placed in fireplace. We had not used it for years due to allergies.

Ordered in chimney caps for 2 flues, main floor and basement fireplaces. As part of installation, I start a super hot fire to burn out nest. Install caps. When it cools down, open insert. Nest gone, but there is a well roasted crispy critter in there. Totally nasty.

But no chimney problems since. Woodrats in the gunroom, stealing brass, etc., is another story.

I love the name of that church! It has branches all over. Most of them keep that part of their names in real little fine print you can hardly see, unless you watch what the members do.

Bogy I was really hoping you would find this. I thought that part especially would give you a smile. Although I also loved the ladies on the Amen Pew.
