Oh man, I could go on and on here. But I would be preaching to the choir. My old boss said to me one day "I bet you don’t have anything in your kitchen that is not an ingredient". He is not wrong.
full disclosure: Asian pantry ingredients; dried pasta; peanut butter and jam; spices; baking chocolate.
Do you make your own jams and jellies? I went to get some grape jelly out of the fridge for a PBJ the other day, using "natural" peanut butter and home made bread, and found that the jelly was made with high fructose corn syrup. Having just read that article about the reasons fructose is such a problem, I opted to just drizzle a little honey on and make a peanut butter and honey sandwich instead... next time I will use the home-made blueberry jam my mother gave me for Christmas!

I still have some processed stuff. Jelly for one, Cherrios for another. And Fruit Loops. I am a cereal junkie. And some Chips Ahoy cookies. But I am off the store bought chips, and I haven't eaten out since late November. I am slowly building up that pantry...
We made jam for some friends and family for Christmas as my wife likes to gift homemade goodies. Unless you've made it yourself, it's hard to believe how much sugar actually goes into jam, and that's on top of the sugar from the fruit itself being concentrated.
Another tip. If you want to get away from commercially processed foods, make a huge amount of pulled beef or pulled pork and portion it flat in vacuum bags and freeze. Easy to thaw whenever in a few minutes and can be used dozens of different ways.

Great read!!! This hits home for me. I’ve spent the last 10 months watching my calories and sodium intake, making sure I drink plenty of water and trying to only eat foods that I make. By making those few changes I’m no longer on blood sugar or thyroid medications and I’ve dropped to only a 1/4 of my blood pressure medicine. I’m down close to 90 lbs as a result of just deciding to eat a little more healthy.
Keep up the good work. I know how hard it is to change old dietary habits.
Eat in moderation. That's the key. I have a similar story. My Dr. cut my metformin in half on my last visit and said if I keep my A1C down (last check was 5.0) he'll consider taking me off of it entirely.
Didn't really change my diet, just changed to healthier eating. I don't deprive myself of anything. Just watch how often I splurge and how much. Down from 312 to 260. I'm tall so I carry 260 pretty well.
Interesting article. Thanks for sharing it. I fall victim to the convenience of processed foods more than we should. I do a lot of home cooking but not as much as I want or need to. We are very busy and I am not a great planner of meals. So many times it's grab something semi-quick. I know I can do it, I just need to do it!
It is hard to find time. Since I have been working mostly from home i have been able to cook more. But if they make me return to the office all bets are off. Getting home after 6 and trying to cook probably won't work.
