Really, ain't nuthin I've ever come across, in this life, can replace a good Victorinox knife, 'specially a really Vintage one, Amigo!

Rather than actual MREs I've got Mountain House for the long term emergency stock (or backpacking, whichever). Available lots of places including Walmart, REI, Amazon, or direct. At some point I may also grab some from Valley Food Storage, available direct only, I think. Both have 30 year storage and a decent rep for taste (keeping in mind that this is freeze dried emergency food).

I've lost one Swiss Army knife working on a pasture fence, had one destroyed by a cat peeing on my backpack where it was, and still have a little one for flying (never wanted to pack knives that meant anything to me). Plus I still have my Scout knife. And then all the regular pocket knives.
