    Baloney And Bologna?

    FYI

What’s The Difference Between Baloney And Bologna? What’s The Difference Between Baloney And Bologna? - Dictionary.com

Thinly dressed with yellow mustard and slapped between two slices of white bread, bologna is found in the lunchboxes of many American youth. But, what does the cold cut have to do with baloney, a slang word that implies nonsense?

The bologna sausage is traditionally made from the “odds and ends” of chicken, turkey, beef, or pork. It is similar to the Italian mortadella, which originated in the Italian city of Bologna. The inexpensive deli meat is often pronounced and spelled “baloney.”

While Oscar Mayer Americanized bologna, it is enjoyed in different forms throughout the world. In Newfoundland, it is a popular breakfast food called the Newfie Steak. In Britain, it goes by Polony. Polony may be derived from the old name for Poland: Polonia. But, like the American word, it may have also come from the Italian city famous for its sausages.

On to baloney: The slang word took off in the 1930s thanks to Alfred E. Smith, who served as the governor of New York four times and was the first Roman Catholic major party nominee to run for president. He frequently used the term baloney in reference to Washington bureaucracy. Incidentally, Governor Smith claimed that as a young man he took his first lessons in the ways of the American populace while working not at a sausage factory, but the Fulton Fish Market in New York, where he earned $12 a week.

It’s also possible that baloney was influenced by blarney, which means “cajolery,” “flattering,” “nonsense,” and “deceptive talk.” The word comes from the legend of the Blarney Stone. Located in a wall in a castle near Cork, Ireland, the stone is said to turn whoever kisses it into a persuasive flatterer.

This really goes in jokes, but is pertinent here:

A new OBGYN doctor was examining his first patient - an elderly lady. He was very nervous and to cover his nervousness, he decided to whistle. Shortly after he started whistling, the patient started laughing. He stopped and asked if he had done something wrong. She said no, but you are whistling "I wish I was an Oscar Mayer weiner".

Hey it’s good stuff! I like the Boar’s Head brand cut in 3/4 inch slices grilled up with a good rub like MMD. There are several rubs that work great. It does seem to up beer consumption when it’s served though. This is the great easy summer evening cook. Go by the store and pickup some bologna and a couple of containers of potato salad and your set.

BE careful, 2 days ago Boar's Head had a deli meat recall due to a listeria outbreak.

I was gonna mention this. A thick slice of BH beef bologna with a decent amount of Maillard browning is really great.

Purc You just saved me a trip to the store and maybe serous illness. The thought of a good grilled baloney sandwich sounded good. Now I think I’ll wait. THANK YOU! Bill

I have had adult bologna parties, Wonder bread, when it used to be available, mustard, and potato chips put in too between the slices of bread for that crunch. Either Campbell's chicken noodle or tomato soup. Takes you right back to being 10 years old heading in for lunch after playing in the snow. Usually had four or more friends joining in. That bologna sandwich was always valuable at school for trading half a sandwich.

Olive loaf is good, but I've always been a P&P guy.

I really liked a brand of bologna out here that came in a garlic flavor, but it is getting hard to find. It was delish, with some mustard on nice fresh white bread.

Recently I went to a local, good Italian deli and got a taste of Italian Mortadella with pistachios. I didn't get a pistachio, but the Mortadella was like an American bologna on meat-steroids! Way better, much meatier and richer for that. It wasn't cheap, especially compared to American bologna, or at least the American style bologna I have had.

A high quality Mortadella is so delicious. Hard to find in my area. I get it when I’m in St. Louis and we make a trip to The Hill which the Italian district there. I stock up on all my favorites.

Boars Head has a garlic bologna. That's what I usually buy unless I'm making BBQ bologna, then it a cheap chub.

The bologna I am looking for is by Bar S, garlic bologna. Used to be able to find it easily, but not any more. It just had a flavor that I liked.

Bkhuna --I will try some of the Boar's Head if I can find it. I have never seen BH bologna in the places that carry BH products, but then again I have never really looked.

Then again, maybe I will get some of that Italian Mortadells. Dang, it was good.
