Got My First Nathan’s - For A Dollar

I noticed this sign while leaning on the cart and watching my favorite vegan ransack the produce section.

We didn’t have lunch plans, but resistance was futile in any event, so for $1 I brought home a cooked jumbo Nathan’s in a bun. Sorry, I should have taken a pic of the dog and bun before I dressed it.

I lined up the condiments and assembled my Chicago style dog using the Portillo’s instructions I’ve previously posted…

and made a mess of it.

Hot dog assembly would be much easier with one of those taco holders, and I’ll need one someday soon when I get around to joining The Pit’s taco craze.

How was the Nathan’s dog? Very, very good. I wouldn’t say it was any better than the Vienna Beef dogs I’ve eaten my whole life, it was just a little different. More hot doggy, like maybe Nathan’s uses the same spices and seasonings, but more of them.

Did I mention it was a dollar?

    I'd eat that.

Looks good there Sid! I’ve never had a Chicago style dog down here in the Tropical Paradise we call Houston. 🙄 But, I’ve never heard of a special pepper just for Chicago dogs. I was reading the Marconi Spot Pepper label. What kind of pepper is that, and can you describe the taste?

I love me some Nathan’s dogs, smoke a few sometime. Now I’ll have to get my hands on some Vienna all beef!

            That’s a steal for a dollar!

Does anyone know what kind of chili a sport pepper is?

                Here’s what I found online…..

Sport peppers are their own unique cultivar, officially known as the Mississippi sport pepper, according to Tom McGlade of the Vienna Beef company, the largest maker of Chicago-style hot dogs and condiments (via the Takeout). You would think it would make more sense for it to be called the Illinois sport pepper, given its principal region of influence, but this little pepper is a geographical jumble, likely originating in South America (via Backyard Gardener). The Takeout likens the sport to a serrano pepper but says it is both smaller and less spicy

"Jeez, I guess that guy from The Spruce Eats is just making up stuff!"

Yeah, I've eaten plenty of these, and I would not call them "medium hot"

Murdy Do you think they’re milder than medium or hotter? My tolerance for heat is very low, so I assume anything I’ll eat is mild. Sometimes they’ll be noticeably hotter and I’ll take them off.

Sid P -- I was thinking they were milder, but I do eat a lot of spicy food, and my tolerance is pretty high.

I have a jar of sport peppers. They are greener than pickled Texas Pete or Trappey’s peppers, but the difference in taste is negligible. I don’t think you could tell them apart blindfolded, or at least pick which is which. If you can get them locally, sure, do that; but they are definitely not worth the premium to order them and pay shipping. They’re just pickled peppers, nothing mind blowing (other than pickled peppers are mind blowing regardless).

texastweeter They’re what I used before I ordered the sports online, and what I’m going to use when the sports are gone.

It's a simple dog, but the surroundings make the meal. Also have loaded skins, chicken tenders, pretzels and beer cheese, a nacho bar, a fruit bar, BLTA sandwiches, and pulled pork sliders.
