    Why hot dogs?

Around 1850 the butchers union in Frankfurt Germany created a long, thin sausage and called it a frankfurter in honor of their city. One of the union members had dachshund, noticed the similarity and started calling it a dachshund sausage. The sausage emigrated to the US with Germans, and were sold hot by street vendors. People were burning their fingers on the hot sausages until one vendor decided to put them in buns. A New York Times employee was impressed enough by the dachshund sausage in a bun to write about it. However, he was not sure how to spell dachshund, so he wound up calling it a hot dog, and the rest is history...

But where did "hot-diggity-dog" come from? Inquiring minds....

I think it came from Pope John since he couldn't curse.

And then, southerners called it a hot dawg.

          Just in case you're wondering:

Where Does Spotted Dick Get Its Name?

When it comes to the name of this dish, it is the second word that makes people scratch their heads. "Spotted," simply enough, refers to the raisins and currants in the dough. The word "dick" originates from the first word for pudding, a "puddick" or "puddog." The term was shortened to "dick" and became the common name for this dessert.

Neat stuff. I'd heard this or very similar in school. I wonder what the original frankfurter tasted like, they surely weren't just bologna sticks like most hot dogs are now, likely more of a bratwurst perhaps? Where did bratwurst get its name?

The hamburger has a similar story relating to Hamburg, Germany. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_hamburger

Brat wurst was a means of survival centuries ago in Germany.
Nothing was let to scrap, so even the timiest bit of whatever wuz saved & thrown into an intestine & a sausage wuz made. Then they took it to Wisconsin & there it was made famous.
Then someone had the brilliant idea of racin em against hot dogs & kielbasa & chorizo & gamblin was invented on racin, yessir.

My wife isn't a massive hot dog fan... but the frankfurters in Austria and Germany - oh man. She'll go to town on those things.
