One Hot Dog Thread Must Spawn Another Right?

It is an Amazing Ribs law I believe.

So, I was reminded of my latest trick to be smart and frugal.

We usually end up buying the cheap generic hot dog buns, which quickly get ruined in the freezer and break into 1000 pieces when you want to use them.

    Yeah.

My brilliant idea: use the nice quality sliced bread in the fridge to wrap around my dog. It holds toppings, perfectly, doesn’t break in two when eating, and I always have a million slices of bread available. None of that six bun per package and 8 dogs per package nonsense.

Works if you are lazy and in between grocery store runs and can’t find the good buns.

We have some resealable Foodsaver bags and put the leftover bunz in them after freezing the bunz naked first. Panhead John - the bunz are naked - not me.

      Do you freeze non-naked buns?

On occasion. If you wrap tightly in plastic wrap after freezing and then put them in an airtight container, the plastic wrap will prevent freezer burn much longer than naked buns. The plastic wrap is not really necessary if you use a vacuum bag, vacuum, and then seal.

For those who are usually on the "no" side of "is it a sandwich" have to allow that this definitely makes it a sandwich.

No. Microwave them from freezer only to have them fall apart when eating or putting the dog in. I guess they get brittle and/or shrink?

Artesano brand buns are good and last a long time without going noticeably stale. I don't know what the hell they do, because the ingredients don't have anything weird, but they really do last an almost disturbingly long time.

I’ve been searching all my adult life for a decent hot dog bun. Too short, too thick, sliced unevenly, sliced too deeply, you name it. They all suck. I kind of like the eastern style (?) buns that you can toast on the outside but never find them here.
