Another "should I eat this" topic.

I bought this, I dunno, last August? Yeah. Sometime in August last year. No packing date, no use by date. It’s sealed up like a drum, and it’s been in the bottom of my meat keeper, not frozen but damn close to 33°, since then.

If it was frozen, I would have no issue with it. Just in the fridge? I wouldn't touch it.

Personally I wouldn't think twice about eating it. I've eaten many things waaaaaaaaay past date. A cured meat wouldn't even make me think it was bad.

After all that it's 100% up to you.

          Does it smell bad? No?
          Does it taste bad? No?
If both questions are unequivocal No....then I'd prob eat it.

But I sure wouldn't blame you if you chucked it, either.

I’d do the smell and taste test as well. If it passes, eat it, if not, toss.

I’d cut the ends off, sniff it, look at it, if it looks ok it probably is. It is cured and 33 is a good temp & it’s sealed/packaged. I would try it. Take a nibble.

On the one hand, it's cured. On the other, it's old, was only refrigerated and is $7. I would probably chuck it even though it's likely safe. Risk/reward and all that.

When in doubt throw it out.

My understanding is that sealed cured meats should last almost indefinitely in the refrigerator.

Thats kind of what I was thinking, too, and why I didn’t just toss. Most of what I got at Alpine that day was marked with dates, this wasn’t. So for dried sausages, it’s optional. I’m going to call them tomorrow and ask. It’s sealed tight.

If I don’t get a clear answer, I’ll probably toss it. It’s not worth $6 to take a chance.

It's fine and if not it would smell bad. BTW I should have said Hard/Dry Sausage such as yout salami will last indefinitely. I'm using pepperoni that old now and it's fresh and delicious.

Really? Pepto and beer don't mix, does it?

Can you call Alpine and get an opinion? Maybe they can tell you a "best by" date based on when you purchased it.

If it was in my meat drawer, I'd toss it, but then my benefit/risk scales always tip toward food safety. The peace of mind alone would be worth it, especially if you plan on feeding it to others.

I'm sure it's fine, it's cured, it's sealed and it's been stored, I'd probably sill dig in. But yeah, one evening of a belly ache isn't worth $6 or $7. It's just the thought of wasting food that would make me still eat it, not the cost.

EDIT, I misread "last August" to mean this past August, 2021. If it were August 2020 that's a different story for me, I'd toss it.

And also, you have to take into account that I’ve had it a year and a half and haven’t felt like eating it yet.

Mosca I guess I missed that, I thought "August last year" meant this past August....but August 2020 changes it for me! Toss that beast.
