Scotch: Current favorite- The Arran (anything by them), Glenmorangie 12yr Lasanta, sherry cask finished. The Balvenie Double Wood, also like Oban 18yr, and The Glenlivet Nadurra (Oloroso sherry cask finished) among others. Neat please.

I realize toasted bagels are excellent, classic, that's what I've done since childhood. But out of necessity recently I had to microwave a couple bagels (no toaster at my workplace at the time) and I discovered I LOVE microwaved bagels!
Butter before or after, doesn't matter, but microwave them 30 seconds+ and they remain soft but get a little chewier, if that makes sense.
A microwaved bagel sandwich is great. A microwaved bagel with cream cheese is also great. Plain bagel microwaved with no toppings…eh. I prefer toasted if available, but have no problem with a microwaved one.
My son started making these fantastic bagel
sandwiches, basically a combo of a spicy Italian & a Caprese salad- so ham, pepperoni, fresh mozz (the sliced, wet kind), olive oil and basil, with mayo, on a bagel. Microwave it until almost too hot. Man o man I'd pay for that somewhere, it was incredible.

My wife actually freezes a whole bag of Thomas’ plain bagels, then nukes ‘em for 30:seconds and then toasts them. Pretty much her go-to for quick lunches with cheese or a slice of something on top. I prefer them untoasted except for Abel’s with lox/onion/tomato/cream cheese.
Sacrilege!! lol, you do you kid. To be fair I haven’t eaten a packaged bagel - or even one that was an hour old for that matter- in probably 30 years. So many fresh made ones here in NJ. It sounds like you’re on to something.
I'm just messing with you. I don't eat many bagels. Even when I had a legit Jewish bagel shop in walking distance from my house I failed to take advantage. My neighbor makes some good bagels though. I'm guessing I won't have another until she bestows some upon me.
I occasionally buy and freeze bagels. If I remember, I cut in half before freezing. When ready to eat, I will take one out of the freezer an do one of two things after I gently defrost, (low power setting on the microwave). Then I put in the hot toaster oven for 1 to 3 minutes, butter and eat, or toast either with or without butter.
Toasting open faced or putting in a hot oven seems to replace the chewiness with a nice crispness.

captainlee - Unfortunately, a bag of Thomas's bagels is to real bagels what Arby's is to prime rib. But yeah, if thats all you have access to, then I agree, toasting is required because those things have no chew, no crust, no texture, so you need a toasting to give it... something
