Something that looks like a colossal turd from an animal consuming a fruit and bran diet shouldn't be on planet earth.

My wife makes Alton Brown’s Free Range Fruitcake every Christmas. I never knew I liked Fruit cake until this one. Takes 14 days or more to get the full booze flavor. It’s awesome.

Well to put it into perspective, I gave my sister and brother in-law a Christmas card this year that stated

" If you give me a fruitcake I will pee on your dog"

Soooo I think I’m saying no to fruitcakes.

Every July 4th I make several fruitcakes based on Alton Brown’s recipe. After cooling they get wrapped in Brandy soaked cheese cloth and placed in double zip lock bags. Turn them every two weeks until the week before Christmas. I make more every year as the request to be included on the gift list increases.

The difference is the use of dried fruit instead of candied.

It's all about the quality of ingredients. I hated fruitcake as a kid. My mom made them with those nasty candied fruits from the grocery store.

Forward a few decades and I saw Alton Brown make one with actual dried fruits and it sparked an interest. Since then, I have developed a liking to well made fruitcake.

I guess I've never had a good one. I'd be more interested in brandy or cognac than rum-soaked, but if there was a reputably fantastic one in the house I'd be willing to give it a try, I suppose.

Growing up, I had a great-uncle by the name of Bill Hoffman, a chef out somewhere in the Houston, Texas area, that sent us the only holiday fruit cakes I ever thought were good. He was a German immigrant who was married to one of my grandmother's sisters. When he passed away in the mid to late 70's, there were no more fruit cakes, and I haven't tasted a good one since.

So I have to say NO to fruit cake, or at least, the crappy store bought variety.

When I was a kid I picked out all the bitter gross fruit nuggets and toasted the bread. That was good. Otherwise no thanks.

                      Same goes for mincemeat pie.

My Husband no longer drinks because in his own words he is not responsible enough to do so.
BUT the fruitcake disappeared over night, and he was still sleeping in at 8 this morning which is unusual for him.
He might have to reconsider his fruit cake consumption?

Honestly, that... would bother me. If you're chunking down an entire fruitcake for the booze, that's not a fruitcake addiction.

I like a toasted slice of fruitcake too, especially if it is home made and just a vessel for the hooch.
