I have a question. I've never done a "light ax formerly used as a tool or weapon by certain Native American peoples" rib steak. Does the rib bone add anything flavor wise to the steak? I suspect it's edible theater, but what do I know?
So what's the deal? FSU fans need not respond.
It looks cool I suppose. As I have learned here it does nothing for the flavor, at least in MH’s opinion. That bone might do really well in the stock pot.

Agree it’s all for show, but part of how we enjoy food is with our eyes. If you enjoy the theatre then it’s fun to have a big honking steak sometimes. I actually like cowboy steaks, or bone in ribeyes. I know there really isn’t any evidence that the meat on the bone is any better but somehow eating it brings me a degree of phycological pleasure.
Regardless I’d rather have the ribs with meat on them then paying for a bone that the dog gets to enjoy.
I have to agree, I do not like BIG food. Burgers with 8 patties and pasta tossed in a 100 pound block of cheese. How the hell are you going to eat that without wearing it. I guess showmanship is important on social media but it’s not for me.
Scotch: Current favorite- The Arran (anything by them), Glenmorangie 12yr Lasanta, sherry cask finished. The Balvenie Double Wood, also like Oban 18yr, and The Glenlivet Nadurra (Oloroso sherry cask finished) among others. Neat please.

Hi, my name's DeeAnna. I admit to buying the occasional tomahawk steak. That's the easiest way I can get a 3"+ ribeye roast from my favorite grocery store without the hassle of special ordering it. When tomahawks are on "sale" at $8.50 per pound with the bone and 1" thick boneless ribeyes are regularly priced at $11 or $12 per pound, it's pretty close to a tradeoff IMO as far as price per pound of meat goes.
And I further admit to cutting the meat off the bone before cooking the ribeye. I'm not into the "theater" of the steak itself as I am into the fun of giving a big honkin' bone to my pups. I enjoy watching them gnaw on it almost as much as I enjoy eating the ribeye.
Just buy standing rib roasts when they go on sale. A few minutes of knife work and you'll have your rib roast and bones galore. My dog loves holidays rib roast bones.
Around here, whole standing ribs go on sale a couple of times of year, especially Christmas,
That's interesting that you never see them go on sale. I see them on sale during the Christmas holidays every year. Generally the small end. Guess it is regional.

100% theater.
Are they better than any other ribeye? Nope. YMMV
Are they mostly absurd? Yep. LOL
The one I did the other day was the only one during that cook... Made for the son of a friend, and the look on people’s faces made everything worth it.
Generally I have no desire to pay for things like bones that I’m not gonna use.
But once in a while, a bit of theater can be fun...like a flambé...or whatever theater suits your fancy.
I’ve never cooked one, but was eyeing them at the market the other day. 2â€-plus thick Prime...absolutely gorgeous. If the right sale comes along I may give one a shot...mostly for all the Instagram (and PIT) likes 😜
