    Meat crimes

Last weekend while at the butchers I bought a 3.5kg whole boneless rib eye with plans to reverse sear it the following weekend. Today I was super busy as normal and let the wife know "hey, pull a bag of ground beef out of the freezer and lets do lasagna tonight ". My mother in law is staying with us for a for a few days. needless to say I get home to find the mother in law attempting meat crimes. She had pulled the rib eye out of the freezer, partially thawed it in the microwave and was cooking it in the gas oven. The inside of the beef was still partially frozen with the outer part completely grey, dry and overcooked! All I could think of while eating it was how good it could have been. The question is: It is getting down to 7c outside tonight should or shouldn't I leave a bowl of water for the mother in law chained to a tree in the backyard tonight? ;(

Woman accused of serving lover’s remains at barbecue

An Indiana woman who injected her husband with a lethal dose of heroin before smothering him with a pillow may be responsible for nine other deaths — and is suspected of serving her lover’s remains to unsuspecting neighbors at a barbecue.

Kelly M. Cochran, 34, was sentenced to 65 years in prison last month after admitting to killing her husband, Jason Cochran. But she was already serving a life sentence for killing and dismembering another lover, Chris Regan, who vanished in 2014, Indy Star reported.

An upcoming documentary called "Dead North," set to air on May 28 and 29 on Investigation Discovery, probes other possible murders that may be linked to Cochran. Cochran’s family told investigators she may have killed as many as nine people and buried their bodies throughout the Midwest.

Her friends and family also told investigators the stomach-churning tale of how Cochran allegedly served Regan’s remains to her neighbors at a barbecue.

Iron River Police Chief Laura Frizzo, who investigated Regan’s disappearance, said she met Cochran and her husband during the probe, court documents stated. The investigator learned Cochran was having an affair with Regan but the case went cold until Jason Cochran died in February 2016 of a suspected overdose. Later on, investigators found he was murdered by his wife.

Cochran admitted she and her husband lured Regan inside their home, shot him and dismembered him, before dumping his remains in the woods. Cochran said she and her husband made a "pact" to "kill off anyone involved in their extramarital affairs."

But Cochran said she was angry at her husband and killed him as revenge for murdering Regan, court documents stated. She was sentenced to life in prison in May 2017 for Regan’s murder and sentenced on April 18 for her husband’s slaying.

Investigation Discovery said in a statement that Cochran’s brother told investigators he feared his sister was a serial killer and neighbors said they believed they were served human remains at the barbecue.

"The toll of this case on Frizzo’s career (is) significant. Despite disagreements with the Iron River City Manager regarding her "bullheaded’ investigation style, Frizzo remains adamant that the case isn’t closed,” the news release stated. "The City Manager relieves Frizzo of her duties just as Kelly admits to having other "friends’ buried in Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee and Minnesota; however, the identities and specific locations of these bodies remain a mystery to this day.”

Poor ribeye. All it wanted was to be delicious.

Oh that's a sad story about the ribeye, Ahumadora . Your mom-in-law must feel bad too, now that she knows that such a pricey piece of meat was ruined. Things could have been worse, though. It could have been waygu ribeye.

It sounds like the MIL is a bit clueless as to exactly what she did. Oh well there's more meat where that came from .... carry on !!!

Kathryn, She is totally clueless to what she did. While we were eating dinner she was nattering on about how good the meat was. ...... I had to bite my tongue and keep chewing on the overcooked parts of the rib eye.

Oh man, Ahumadora, that's pretty clueless about meat cooking. But then I never had a steak that wasn't pan fried to shoe leather until I left home. Just because they're our Moms or MILs doesn't make them good cooks.

I died a little inside just now.

I have a similar MIL story...I am known within my family as the dude that loves to grill (hence my presence here lol) so when I'm going to have a bbq or just cook dinner etc everyone's fired up (pun intended) and won't request "special provisions" on what's cooked. Unless it's an allergy or something that is. So I've made steaks multiple times for my in laws and the most recent time I did I was prepping the grills for a reverse sear. Now these steaks were some beautifully marbled USDA Prime New Yorks, each about 1.5" thick. She came outside and said pointing to the grill "so...is this the one that gives it a smokey flavor?"
"Sure is!" I replied. She said "oh..yeah don't cook mine on that I don't like it like that, use that one" and proceeded to point to my little emergency camping gasser. "And I want mine well done" she added. Naturally I bit my tongue, said sure enough and gave her what she wanted.

That was the last time I bbqd for my in laws about 6 months ago. The last time they were here she asked for a steak so I cooked up some good cast iron steaks. It works well to force me to hone my CI skills.

Love my MIL to death, but man sometimes she's in a world of her own!

I vote guilty & this is not rigged. Throw the book at her, swing from the yard arm. Make her walk the plank, drop & give me twenty, no punishment is to severe. Or, sign her up for one of your classes. Although, that would be much to lenient. Both me & my wife gasped when I read this aloud. I am sorry for your loss.

I wholeheartedly agree, except I would have said "no punishment is too severe." "Both my wife and I" and "much too lenient" However that may be due to my lack of coffee, perhaps I'll think differently after another cup or to. ;-)

That’s exactly why nobody, and I mean nobody, is allowed to touch my meat/fish freezers or my curing/aging refrigerator!!! Nor do I want anyone grocery shopping for me! If I wanted low fat, no fat, bargain brands or "just about the same", I would say so! I love cooking for others but I hate when they try to "help"!!! Rant over!!!

Mother in laws....you either love em or hate em. I’m more of the hate to love em. And she wonders why every time they come to visit I have a bottle of whiskey on the counter.
