    Hanger Steak Question

I am having a he** of a time finding hanger steaks. I'd love to try one, but can't find 'em--EXCEPT on Crowd Cow, where they are typically listed as weighing 3/8 to 1/2 pound. My understanding is that a hanger steak weighs 1--1.5 pounds. What gives? Where do you find hanger steaks?

    On a hanger?

We see them in Wegmans. Sometimes Safeway.

You’ll need to find a legit butcher, or a "fancier " grocer that moves a lot of meat. I’ve seen them at Restaurant Depot, but you’re in for a larger quantity there. I like to get whole top blades at Restaurant Depot and butcher down into Flat Irons. I’ve stayed away from the Hanger steaks at RD because it was only USDA Select.

The hanger comes off the diaphragm so I’m not really sure USDA grading has much bearing, but I wasn’t going to make a 50 dollar guess.... I don’t know the typical weight. The skirt steak is larger from my memory but it’s tougher. I learned some stuff from my uncle who is a retired butcher, but I’ve never done wholesale or retail butchering

Hi Willy, I can't help you with where to purchase it in the US, but you're right in that it weighs more. 3/8 to 1/2 pound is tiny. I've bought and grilled plenty of hanger steak, and they weigh 1.5 - 2 lbs.
