    Another way to save

I know some of you are aware of the end of the meat counter in several stores where they mark down things that are near their sell or freeze by date. I hadn’t looked in one in quite a while but had something open my eyes in Walmart Saturday. I went in to get another select brisket because that’s what the website said they had. When I got there I saw 3 briskets so I started checking them out. To my surprise one of them was a certified angus choise and it was marked down by $39.99. It’s sell by date was today. I grabbed it up immediately. I got a 17 pound certified angus for $52.00. I’ll be checking the briskets and steaks a bit closer there now. The brisket is on the smoker now. I’m really happy with it, it’s beautifully marbled. There are still some good finds out there to save a dollar.

I look for yellow labels/tags all the time. Now that I got my chest freezer I can convert it to "Yellow Tag Bin of Goodness"

Exactly! Back when I was raising kids we used a bunch of yellow tagged stuff. You can pay for a freezer that way.

Love the yellow tags at Sam's as well as at Walmart

I friend in Burkburnett, Texas, found an upper 2/3 choice brisket for $3.29 a pound, haven't gotten it out of him yet, as to where that was .

Spent a night at the Ramada in Burkburnett back in late March on the way to Arizona.

I know that doesn't have anything to do with cooking but I know where you are talking about. Nice country!

Lynn Dollar I was born in Texas but raised and educated in Oklahoma. Boomer Sooner! I have been back in Texas for 50 years. In most things I’m Texas all the way. When the red river shoot out happen I bleed crimson and cream.

Been doing this for 20 years. My freezer is full of "Manager Specials"....proteins marked down due to the "sell by date". I have Tri-tips, NY strips, Filets, Ribeye's, flap meat, lamb chops, boneless leg of lamb, chuck roasts, sausages, etc., etc. I rarely ever buy protein at the full market price.

I keep telling Mrs Dollar, who loves getting her groceries delivered, that occasionally it pays to go the store and shop.

Same here! Unless you want/need something specific, there's no reason to pay full price. Ever!

Discount bins are the first place I check when shopping. I rarely go to Walmart but the discounted meats I've seen are good quality and marked down to a great price.

Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough or shopping at the wrong times, but I rarely see my HEB doing this.

For the first time since my college days, I have a Walmart close to me, so I’ll have to start looking for the yellow tags. I have been disappointed by the brisket selection thus far, mostly just select.

That bin, at least here, is hit and miss Choice or Select. On any given day FULL of either one.

Always, always check the mark-down bins near the meats. I haven't gotten that lucky yet, but do usually snag a few deals here and there.

I look meat with a little green on the fat, and ask for a discount.
I get a good deal, sometimes free.
No worries,I was going to trim some of the fat off anyways...
