Sorry - bad news on beef prices

It's not looking good for the folks (like me) that REALLY love there beef steaks and roasts.

Higher beef prices and additional choices could result in more Americans seeking alternative protein sources, according to a recent Federal Reserve Bank report.

In my part of the country, the bargain meat is boneless skinless chicken thighs at $1.99 a pound or they go on sale for $1.77 a pound. I hope they don’t go the way of other popular cuts of meat. Wings used to be dirt cheap.

Seems like a bad cycle to me. High beef prices = lower beef consumption = closing processing plant = even higher beef prices = even lower beef consumption...plus the wild card of the return El Nino and the screw worm.. I guess it is sad that my wife will have to become a vegetarian so there is beef for me.

Right now our best bet for non-beef protein is pork from Sam’s Club. Bone in pork butt is $1.98 as is boneless pork loin. I can take a boneless loin and cut at least 18 good thick pork chops from it. I normally wet brine those for about 3 hours before going to the grill. They turn out so good and moist.

I had a cute little surprise the other day. Because I am lazy, I typically buy boneless skinless chicken thighs. Well, I had a recipe that needed bone-in skin-on, so I picked up what I thought was a 5-pack of thighs.

Nearly $10! Freaking heck....everything is so expensive!

Imagine my surprise when I got home, opened the pack to find it was not a 5-pack, but a 10-pack! A dollar a thigh? Yes, please!

And, embarrassingly I must admit, as these thighs had minimal handling, they honestly were in better shape than the boneless ones I typically get. Sure, lot of extra skin, but I can cut that right off. And they are less than half the price, too.

I have started buying quarters. My son likes the drums, and they are easy to separate. And cheap.

Maybe this will slow demand, and beef prices will drop. Or we may become vegans in the near future
Oregon Initiative Petition 28 (IP28), the PEACE Act, is a proposed 2026 ballot measure that would criminalize hunting, fishing, trapping, livestock farming, and other animal-use practices by removing existing legal exemptions.

In Colorado, bison and beef are almost the same price and at those prices I’ll take bison.

$19.99/lb for sirloin yesterday/ at the store. You've got to be kidding me.

I just spent $265.00 on two big briskets........that used to be like $120 or so. Bring back $2.99/LB Prime brisket!

Ouch! Do you really have friends that are worth that kind of an outlay? Or do you have a LARGE family that, of course, would be worth it? 😁

If my 'party' involves more than one person (me), I have it catered. Cost is slightly higher, but I don't have to do any work. I like that.❤️

Another reason I want to learn how to butcher bigger pieces of meat. I 'attempted' a chuck roll a few months ago and let's just say there was a large amount used for ground beef. But, I am determined to learn.

Just bought some meat at Chefs Store. Not tried it yet. Got a strip for just over $10 per lb and will cut it myself. It’s all getting out of hand. My bigger concern is not being able to find beef.

Was at Aldi Saturday and going by the meat case they had some Mortons of Omaha filets on sale for $7.99. There were only two left in the case so I purchased them both. I did not like that they were already seasoned but for that price figured give them a try. And it was Rosemary and herbs and Rosemary is such a strong seasoning and I do not use that herb much. They weight about two pounds and there were two in the package. Grilled the one last night and it was quite good. Looks like the filet is the end piece of a tenderloin that they probably cut into filet mignon and sold the narrow end off. Good price and taste anyway

I love beef, it is by far my fav, thankfully we have several angus chuck roasts, a few packs of beef cheeks, and some beef tongue in the freezer, plus several 1 lb packs of ground chuck.

But truly I enjoy eating & cooking, so whether it is beef, pork, chicken, seafood or even some weeknight vegetarian meals, we will enjoy the food. I certainly am not going to go out and start paying a ton of money, soley because I prefer beef. I also will not stop buying it, I enjoy beef the most.

It kind of goes back to the post on the philosophy of "Hunger is the best sauce", if you have something maybe a bit less right now, it will even taste better when you do have it.

The Fresh Market here in Chatt features ground in store chuck for $4.99/lb on Tuesday’s, and I think it is even cheaper if you sign up for their loyalty plan in store. I usually buy a few pounds every couple of weeks.
