It's all about marketing. I agree with you and was wondering why folks would want to pay for a decorative "bone" in their steak. Unless they don't have a fork nor knife.
The tomahawk steak isn’t the best bargain out there, for sure. But, as an occasional treat I’ve done it before. It’s strictly for presentation though, the long bone does nothing for flavor. But, damn it looks good in pictures!
I bought a tomahawk as a bucket list and presentation item. It was a gift from a Wild Fork gift card so it gave the gift giver an extra sense of accomplishment getting what looked to be a great gift.
Having said that, I did pick one out that had a somewhat shorter bone than others as except for a trivial (but tasty) amount of trimmings, it was useless. Not like it's even adding flavor to the meaty part of the steak.

My Ralph's sells Tomahawk steaks at roughly $26/lb. I don't really like Tomahawk steaks, but if I buy one I always get them when they are marked down in the Manager's Special section. Last time I bought one I paid like $13. That was worth it to me.
Much rather buy the boneless ribeye's. But again, only from the Manager's Special section.
Can't look at it in isolation - you have to compare it to the price of a normal bone-in ribeye.
If they were both $26/lb I would get the regular bone-in ribeye but if for some reason the tomahawk was cheaper per lb, I would consider it, but otherwise I would not pay $1 more for a tomahawk steak compare to a normal bone-in ribeye.

It is a rip off from the stance that you are paying for something you are not eating. Yes. If I am cooking for myself and Sabrina, I never by bone in ribeyes. I am not paying for a bone.
That being said, it is really fun and entertaining to cook them over a live fire. I love using the bone like a handle to flip. Plus, when you bring it to the cutting board and cut the meat off the bone, that is the best presentation for guests.
It is not about "getting the best deal" it is about entertaining and having fun while cooking. I mean......this was pretty fun.
Speaking of expensive bones, I was shocked to see a rack of beef back ribs, which are mostly bone, for $77 at a well-known mail-order meat purveyor. Not short ribs, back ribs. No thanks. I remember when back ribs were ~$10/rack.

Current cookers Weber Spirit 3 burner with a full insert griddle added. A 22" Kettle with vortex, SnS and a Smokey Joe. The most recent addition is a Pit Barrel Jr with bird hanger, 4 hooks and cover. ThermoWorks Smoke 2 probe, DOT, 2 ThermoPops and a Thermapen MK4. A Thermoworks RFX Gateway 2 probe meat thermometer.
I've never bought tomahawk. I came close once. They were displayed. I told the butcher I'd like 2. He said, why would you want to pay for the bone? He brought out the same cut minus the bone. Laid one on top of the other then next to each other. Literally, exact same cut, no bone. I never looked back.
Scotch: Current favorite- The Arran (anything by them), Glenmorangie 12yr Lasanta, sherry cask finished. The Balvenie Double Wood, also like Oban 18yr, and The Glenlivet Nadurra (Oloroso sherry cask finished) among others. Neat please.
