Did Creekstone send me a strip loin roast instead of a Ribeye roast?

I ordered a prime rib roast from Creekstone earlier in the week and received this today. I've never bought a rib roast from them and am hoping that Spinaker Huskee Mosca Uncle Bob will tell me that this isn't a strip loin cause it sure does look like it.

Nah. The rib loins come rather flat like that due to vacc-packing. To get that perfect cylinder roast shape they need squashed and tied. I wondered the same myself the first time I got one.

hoovarmin Even if they did mistakenly send you a strip, it would cook up mighty fine too, especially after wet aging 1-2 months.

It's rib. The ones that Costco sell look exactly like that as well. I always ask to see several because I like them as plump as I can get 'em. Leave that puppy to wet age for a few weeks, or better yet, get an Umi bag and dry age it for 60 days. MMM...mmm...good !! Enjoy it

I would love to do that, but this baby is for Christmas dinner. I'm looking at picking up a second fridge and if I do I'm going to order those Umi bags in bulk!

You know I re-read your post and original question. That is NOT a prime rib per se. Did you order a rib subprimal (that's what you got) or a Prime Rib Roast?

Yeah that's the full loin, that's what you want, best meat:$ ratio

Pro tip: Just don't leave it sitting in the back of your truck for a week. That might be fine in Michigan winter, but perhaps not so much in NB, Fla!

Smaller roast, younger cow, more tender beef. I just cut the slices thicker.

Either way you won't go wrong. We made their strip lion last Christmas and it was sooo good we're doing the same again this year.

Steve B Did you cook it whole or cut it into steaks?

I've done one as a roast too, prob 5-6lbs, and without a side by side you really couldn't tell it wasn't prime "rib", one thing for sure it was far less fatty, in a good way! Tender, delicious.

      hoovarmin Yes.
I cut 2 steaks off each end and used the rest as a roast.
This is the roast I’ll be seasoning up for Christmas and one of the steaks that I just had to try. 😁

They did send me a strip loin once instead of a rib loin. They told me to keep it and sent me another one.

I think I remember that story now that I read it again. That was a cool deal there!

Yeah first one they sent was almost cut in half with a butchers cut. Second one was a strip loin. Third one they got right. I got to keep them all.

Okay Dave, apparently the Bearded Butchers saw your original post and made a video to further explain the cut and variations : How To Cut Beef Prime Rib 3 Different Ways | By The Bearded Butchers! (youtube.com)

Added bonus, watch the nifty way he ties and knots.

Great video. I saw those guys once before being interviewed about cattle mutilations out west. They went to some of the sites and were asked if they would be able to make the cuts that were made on the cattle and extract the organs without leaving blood evidence and they said that it was not humanly possible to do that. Pretty wild stuff. Thanks for the vid Uncle B. I can clearly see from this that my package is in fact the "Ribeye roast" that he carves.
