What should I get for $1400 CDN? A single whole beef tenderloin or a Grilla Grills Silverback?
High end beef is like caviar now. Only the 1%'ers get to eat it. Us serfs are lucky to be able to find a good prime brisket on sale. The price of beef is so high now its not easy to afford the good stuff any more. Costco Canada has some very expensive beef. This is the most expensive offering at $1400.
Thats how much it costs for a Silverbac up here. The value for money difference is a real head scratcher to me.
I was just looking through Costco’s specialty meats online and I too was wondering who is buying this stuff. Everyone has a different story but wow is some of that stuff expensive.
A guy in this town takes a private jet to Las Vegas. He has a $75000 cap on what he can gamble/trip. The airport runway is 5,501ft long. It has 3 private jets. This county's biggest town is 5600 strong, and that makes up 1/5 of the county population.
There's plenty out there who can throw that amount of money around likes it's nothing.. Even in rural America.
Sounds like my DIL’s boss, has a huge estate on Erie’s north shore.
It’s an 11-12KM drive to work so maybe 8-9 mins.
He has an Airbus whatever model helicopter fly him to/from work everyday.
Sux to be him....
Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
To be fair, Costco.com has a lot of very expensive speciality meats that are not available in the store which carries more common cuts at great prices.
That’s why we eat probably 90% chicken and pork in this household.
Price of chicken has dropped in this area and pork even more.
Beef is a luxury on our grate, that being said when there is a sale we pile on, RCSS had ground beef last week $10 for a probably 3k flat, we brought 7 of them.
Our local Walmart called the BBQ season last week, emptied the entire store of anything BBQ related. Had very little anyway so no great loss but now can’t even buy a bag a charcoal or wood chips. Sure other stores around but not Wally prices.
Good point on the chicken and pork being where its at for price right now and there is nothing wrong with that. Good bbq is what matters. I made this recipe for the first time on the weekend. I'm a serious eats/kenji fan but wasn't aware of this recipe. I roast and grind the cumin for the paste. And the green sauce is delicious and versatile.
What really blows is Alberta used to be the beef capital of Canada.
Has beef farming dropped off that much out there?
I know around here you just don't see the feedlot herds you saw 10-12 years ago.
And thank you for the recipe, its on the bucket list.
I am not sure if Alberta beef quality changed. I noticed a bad decline of beef at Calgary costco's starting about 2.5 years ago. Marbling totally dropped off their AAA. Streaks of fat, not marbling. I talked to one meat dept guy there and he said the good stuff is being exported for more $$$. Tip on blending the green sauce. Gradually the jalepeno after the ajà amarillo pepper paste to your hotness level. I found it too hot.
I would leave Canada if I could now. Too woke and broke for my liking. and decent BBQ season is only 7 months long and the other 5 require a snow blower to get to the cooker and you have to be careful of polar bears and hungry beavers.
