Yeah, I’m done with the giveaway idea, I should have run it through Meathead first before posting. My intentions were good, but this is probably something that I should have done differently.

We all know your intentions were good. Unfortunately if a sweepstakes or contest doesn’t qualify for the federal guidelines, of course written for corporations, then it is up to the individual states or jurisdictions to set their own rules. In our county a church or an organization like the VFW has to get a permit just to have a bingo game.

Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
Regarding non-posting members: Imagine the chaos if all 17000 members posted just once a day. The Pit would become unusable.
On the flip side: $35/yr x 17,000 is $595k, which, as a gross number, covers a whole lot of administrative costs, salaries, miscellaneous expenses, and, yes, the Monthly Giveaways.
So, it’s fine with me if most of them pay and then get out of the way.

PJ,
FWIW, I think the more fun aspect is the smack down.
The cooks do not have to be cooker versus cooker. The can be who can cook the most creative rack of ribs, who can use this specific rub in the best way, who can build the best burger, who can copy this YouTube recipe, cook a recipe out of this cookbook only or use x,y, and z ingredient for a cook etc.
Have fun with it.

Dear Panhead John the one who rejects the offer to help:
Coor's Light is all the same
Except this Coor's Light that's inside of me
Wait and you will see
That you'll feel the flame
Falling so low
Darkness will follow me
All alone we go
Let's go fade away
This Coor's Light and I, Just die
I don’t know why I don’t just die
This Coor's Light and I, Just die
I don’t know why I don’t just die

PJ, I think even the smackdowns might run afoul of the sweepstakes regulations. Before they become a regular part of life here in the Pit, I would suggest you run the concept by Meathead (or hire a lawyer who knows this stuff).

Even if we were able to do it, I started realizing what a huge undertaking this would have been. The more comments that came in, the more it looked like it could easily turn into a big mess. I started thinking, man, what if we have 100-200 people wanting in? Or more…No way I could handle that by myself. The Bronco thing was only the possibility of 12 or so people eligible. Yeah, this is for the best….

Believe me, we've talked about any options that we could do for more fun & rewards here, including something for overseas members, even if it were as simple as a membership credit (so they would in effect win $23.95 or $34.95 USD & there'd be no 'prize' to claim or to ship) but those doggone laws prohibit it. The best we could do was split the monthly prize into 3 prizes, and work to get more vendors with a few more goodies to make that happen. We're still thinking of ways to make it better but as you well know, even popular, actively-posting members can still win, it's happened with several so far. Mr Bones, won, MrMisunderstood (now known as BigCountryQ ) won, Mettius won (2 months in a row!), jfmorris won... and another well known member or two whom I'm forgetting as well...so it happens. We've even had several unknown, non-posting members who won and then became active in the forum here.

bordercollie won also……I’ve mentioned this before but she joined up and started posting almost immediately, right after joining, she won the next months drawing! That was cool…..Last edited by Panhead John; August 12, 2022, 01:00 PM.

Huskee Meathead I really hope y’all didn’t think I was being critical or dismissive of the monthly drawings. That was absolutely not my intent and I hope y’all didn’t take it that way. The monthly drawings are fantastic and the prizes are really good ones! As has been mentioned many times, the drawings aren’t the reason we join AR anyway, they’re just a bonus. I was only trying to add a little more fun to this already great site.

Panhead John I didn't think that at all, I try not to put words into folks' mouths or assume negative intentions. I think you're trying to do a great thing in drumming up more fun here. And we wish we could do more too. I/we are glad you like the Club beyond just the chance of winning a drawing! We think it's fun to hang out. We also enjoy being able to teach those who simply read/browse and don't post. If folks' avatars showed how many posts they've read well we might all be surprised how active many folks are aside from posting. This community is all a two way street and we love it.

Panhead John Never, ever stop thinking out of the box. Personally, I’m glad that you fully articulated this idea and then ran it up the flagpole for critique. Personally, I really enjoyed the spontaneity of the first smackdown competition and the fun way it evolved. Even if there’s not another smackdown giveaway due to legal red tape, your legacy is secure. Carry on bro!

Keep the smack downs going. Plenty of websites have photo contests. Prize could just be an apron or hat or T-shirt. Something small. Bragging rights and a token trophy.
Hell I feel like I won when one of my SUWYC pictures makes it into the monthly news letter!

Old Glory Oh yeah, the Smackdowns will continue for sure. And you just had an excellent idea! What’s to stop one of us from buying something here off the AR clothing line…aprons or hats etc.and having it sent to the winner? Like you said, something simple and not expensive…hmmm ðŸ§

I have enjoyed the thought process behind this. I would love to put a little skin in the the game and have a chance to win items but certainly understand the legalities of these things. This has been fun to both follow and imagine.
